What you shouldn't do immediately after eating
There are many suggestions on what to eat and what not to eat immediately after your meals. While some of these suggestions are true, the rest are just myths. Let us bust a few myths and present a few facts by listing down four things you should not do after you have had a meal. At the very least, you should wait over 30 minutes to an hour after you've eaten to do these things.
1. Don't swim. There have been debates about this subject, but we quote data from Men's Health, which sought the opinion of Christine Carter-Kent, M.D., a gastroenterologist with the Cleveland Clinic. She said that it's best to wait for at least more than 30 minutes after eating before you swim because "more blood is drawn to your gastrointestinal tract after eating, which can cause minor cramps." Now, cramps don't always happen, but isn't better to be safe than sorry?
2. Don't take a bath or shower. To digest your food properly, you need the blood flow to be stimulated towards stomach. Bathing does exactly the opposite. It diverts the blood flow towards your hands and feet. This affects the digestion of the food and can further lead to more health issues. Experts recommend that you wait for around half an hour before you take a shower after having meal.
3. Don't sleep. Gravity plays its part here. As soon as you lie down, the digestive juices start flowing away from the stomach, and this can cause intestinal inflammation. This is the reason why people feel a burning sensation in their mouth if they sleep immediately after a heavy meal. By sleeping after eating, you are only putting additional pressure on your diaphragm.
4. Don't go for a walk. Get rid of the age-old belief that walking immediately after the meal helps in better digestion. Walking indeed helps in burning energy but doing it as soon as you finish your meals only leads to acid reflux and prevents digestive juices from absorbing the nutrients of the food.
5. Don't drink tea. While tea has its own benefits, when it comes to diffusing cardiovascular diseases, the polyphenols in tea makes it difficult for your body to absorb the iron from your food. The acid content in tea also interferes with the proteins in the food. This is the reason it is recommended not to drink tea immediately after a meal.
