Praying for nepal-tibet border residents and tourists
A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide struck the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, causing widespread devastation. The disaster has claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with hundreds more reported missing on both sides of the border.
🚨 Current Situation & CasualtiesDeaths: At least 157 fatalities have been confirmed in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, and at least 3 deaths have been reported in Tibet.Missing Persons: Over 1,400 people are currently missing. This includes hundreds of foreign tourists, pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash, and local border security personnel.Impacted Areas: The most severe damage occurred at the Gyirong Port border crossing and communities downstream along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.📉
⚠️Cause and Destruction
A preliminary assessment suggests that a massive ice and rock avalanche or powerful landslide broke off in a high-altitude valley, temporarily damming the river before bursting. This sent an apocalyptic, 10-meter-high wall of mud, water, and debris surging through border facilities and nearby villages. The surge completely destroyed at least 19 vehicle bridges and swallowed major roadways, severely hindering active search and rescue operations
