Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira, commonly transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals, particularly rats. In the Philippines, the risk increases after flooding and heavy rains, especially when people wade through contaminated floodwater with cuts, wounds, or unprotected skin. Common symptoms include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, chills, vomiting, and red eyes. Severe disease may lead to jaundice, kidney or liver failure, bleeding, breathing problems, and even death.

Prevention is the best protection. Avoid wading or swimming in potentially contaminated floodwater whenever possible. If exposure is unavoidable, wear boots, gloves, and protective clothing, cover wounds properly, wash thoroughly with soap and clean water afterward, and maintain good environmental sanitation and rodent control. People who develop fever or other symptoms after floodwater exposure should seek medical attention promptly and tell the healthcare provider about the exposure.

Treatment depends on the severity of the illness, but early antibiotic therapy prescribed by a healthcare professional can reduce complications. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY if there is:
🔴 Severe abdominal pain
