TAU - College of Agriculture and Forestry

TAU - College of Agriculture and Forestry Center of Development for Agriculture Estrada as the College President with Dr. Camilo C. Laranang as the first Dean. Ibarra as TCA President.

The College of Agriculture evolved from the Department of Higher Education in 1982 during the incumbency of Dr. Robustiano J. Pioneer courses offered included Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, the latter then created as an autonomous Institute in 1983. Two-year courses such as Associate in Agricultural Technology and Certificate in An

imal Technology were added as program offerings. Envisioning sustainable rural development through viable and competitive agriculture, agroforestry and environmental programs, Board Resolution No. 52, s. 2000 provided for the merging of the Institute of Agriculture and the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Studies in 2002 to become the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (IAF) upon the ascendancy of Dr. Philip B. This expanded the courses offered with the addition of Bachelor of Science in Forestry and the 2-year Forest Ranger Certificate. The verticalization of the graduate studies program was implemented through Board Resolution No. 51, s. 2002, the Institute started Ph.D. in Rural Development, Agronomy, Swine Production, and Poultry Production, Master of Science in Agriculture with majors in Agronomy, Horticulture, Animal Science, and Farming Systems Development, Master of Science in Forestry and Master of Forestry. In 2006, the offering of Bachelor of Science in Food Technology was absorbed by CAF brought about by the dissolution of the Institute of Home Science and Technology. This paved the way to what CAF is today: an Institute with five departments: Animal Science, Crop Science, Food Technology, Forestry and Graduate Program, each headed by a Chairman. Today, CAF is equipped with committed faculty members in the pursuit for excellence in providing education and training for sustainable agri-industrial development through instruction, research, extension and production.

In celebration of Arbor Day 2026, the Department of Forestry of College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) successfully conducted the "Gender Responsive Bamboo Planting and Environmental Stewardship" activity on June 27, 2026, at the Calao Forest Reserve, Sitio Calao, San Jose, Mayantoc, Tarlac.

The activity brought together faculty members and students to promote environmental conservation through bamboo planting. The event highlighted the University's commitment to sustainable natural resource management while fostering gender equality by encouraging the active participation of each individual.

While Arbor Day is traditionally associated with tree growing, this year's celebration highlighted bamboo as a banner commodity and a sustainable alternative to trees in appropriate landscapes. Bamboo performs many of the same ecological functions as trees, it sequesters carbon, stabilizes slopes, reduces soil erosion, protects watersheds, enhances biodiversity, and contributes to climate change mitigation. Its rapid growth, remarkable regenerative capacity, and wide range of environmental and economic benefits make bamboo an ideal species for landscape restoration and sustainable forest management.

As the newly planted bamboo continues to grow, it symbolizes not only the restoration of forest landscapes but also the collective commitment of the TAU community to building a greener, more resilient, and sustainable future for generations to come.

The Department of Forestry of Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) gratefully received a donation of native tree seedlings on June 14, 2026, for the enhancement and conservation efforts of the TAU Arboretum.

The donation was generously provided by Mr. Mc George Guillermo, a native tree enthusiast, through Baby Jean L. Herbulario, RPF, the person in-charge of the TAU Arboretum. The seedlings will serve as valuable additions to the arboretum's collection and support the university's initiatives in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and the preservation of indigenous tree species.

The donated seedlings include Malabulak (Bombax ceiba), Dapdap (Erythrina variegata), Philippine Teak (Tectona philippinensis), Tindalo (Afzelia rhomboidea), Batikuling (Litsea baticulin), Balai Lamok (Crateva religiosa), Makaasim (Syzygium nitidum), Malauban/Lamog (Planchonia spectabilis), Ipil (Instia bijuga), Pamitoyen (Calophyllum pentapetalum), Akle (Albizia acle), Balobo (Diplodiscus paniculatus), Daram (Wendlandia luzoniensis), Kalukoi (Ficus callosa), Dalinsoi (Terminalia surigaensis), Tangisang Bayawak (Ficus variegata), Malak-malak (Palaquium philippense), Malatapai (Alangium longiflorum), Kalantas (Toona calantas), Kalumpang (Sterculia foetida), Anilao (Colona serratifolia), Supa (Sindora supa), Ligas/Kamiring (Semecarpus cuneiformis), Salinggogon (Cratoxylum formosum), and Bagras (Eucalyptus deglupta).

The Department of Forestry expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Guillermo for his generous contribution and unwavering support for forest conservation. This donation strengthens the university's commitment to promoting native tree species and provides students, researchers, and visitors with greater opportunities for learning and appreciation of the country's rich forest biodiversity.

Such collaborative efforts play an important role in cultivating environmental stewardship and ensuring the conservation of native Philippine tree species for future generations.
