"Colon surgery doesn't have to mean a long hospital stay."

Just last week, I had the privilege of doing surgery on a relative of a very close friend of mine. She is 69 years old, and was complaining of intermittent hematochezia. She immediately sought consult, workup was done, and was diagnosed with an early stage node-negative Sigmoid Adenocarcinoma.

In collaboration with my colleague Dr. Jan Michael Yap, we were able to formulate a personalized plan befitting of her condition.

Long story short, we did an Anterior Resection with low IMA ligation. The surgery was done under ERAS protocol (enhanced recovery after surgery protocol).

ERAS protocol is a strategy used to blunt the physiologic insult of colon surgery and prevent the cascade that leads to complications.

Using this strategy, we focus on:
-less pain with minimal opioid use
-early walking and feeding
-early return to bowel function
-shorter hospital stays.

With these principles - the patient was able to recover smoothly and mobilize early.
