Sometimes, the best investment in becoming a better physician is taking time to simply be human.

This weekend, our Fellows-in-Training stepped away from hospital rounds and clinic schedules to reconnect with natureโ€”and with one anotherโ€”at Cebu Safari. Beyond the learning that happens within hospital walls, these shared moments of laughter, adventure, and friendship remind us that work-life balance is not a luxury but a necessity.

Caring for ourselves allows us to better care for our patients. Hereโ€™s to creating memories, strengthening our team, and returning with renewed energy and purpose. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿ’š

Day 2 | RED Postgraduate Course

The Section of Medical Oncology was well represented at the Chong Hua Hospital RED Postgraduate Course as Dr. Michelle Oporto delivered an insightful lecture on Immunotherapy. Her expertise and thoughtful discussion highlighted the transformative role of immunotherapy in modern cancer care, providing valuable perspectives for clinical practice.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn from distinguished experts and to continue advancing our knowledge in the pursuit of excellence in patient care.

FIRE-3 Trial
The FIRE-3 trial was a phase III, open-label, randomized study comparing FOLFIRI + cetuximab versus FOLFIRI + bevacizumab as first-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer. The primary efficacy analysis focused on patients with KRAS wild-type tumors.

FOLFIRI + cetuximab did not significantly improve the primary endpoint of objective response rate compared with FOLFIRI + bevacizumab. However, it was associated with longer overall survival, highlighting the importance of biologic selection in metastatic colorectal cancer.

Patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) have limited treatment options after progression on standard therapies. The FRESCO-2 Phase III, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of fruquintinib, a highly selective VEGFR inhibitor, in heavily pretreated patients across 124 centers in 14 countries.

๐Ÿ’ก Conclusion:
Fruquintinib treatment resulted in a significant and clinically meaningful benefit in overall survival compared with placebo in patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer. These findings support fruquintinib as an effective later-line treatment option for patients who have exhausted standard therapies.

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’™ Brushing Away Fear and Anxiety Through Art Therapy ๐Ÿงก๐ŸŽจโค๏ธ

Cancer survivors and their family members came together to express their creativity and emotions through various art activities, including pottery painting, bag painting, diamond painting, and clay art. These hands-on experiences provided a relaxing and supportive environment where participants could ease fear and anxiety, strengthen family bonds, and celebrate their journey of healing and resilience.

Through every color, design, and creation, participants were reminded that hope, courage, and healing can be found in even the simplest acts of self-expression.
โœจ Celebrating survivorship, creativity, and the strength to keep moving forwardโ€”one brushstroke at a time.

Todayโ€™s Joint Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) conference at Chong Hua Hospital brought together the Section of Medical Oncology and the Section of Infectious Disease for a meaningful and collaborative discussion.

Using a pancreatic cancer case as our take-off point, the team focused on the critical role of infection clearance prior to initiating chemotherapy. The discussion highlighted the importance of thorough patient evaluation, timely identification and management of infections, and coordinated decision-making to optimize treatment outcomes.

This collaboration underscores how integrated care across specialties ensures safer and more effective cancer management. By aligning oncologic goals with infection control strategies, we continue to strengthen patient-centered care and improve overall treatment readiness.

Looking forward to more collaborative MDTs that bridge expertise and enhance clinical practice.
