JICA InaWaTaNu-BARMM Project Holds First TWG Meeting for Community Health Activities

COTABATO CITY — The Ministry of Health of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-BARMM), in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) InaWaTaNu-BARMM Project, conducted the First Technical Working Group (TWG) Meeting for Community Health Activities on August 17, 2026, at the Minister’s Hall, MOH-BARMM, Cotabato City.

The meeting was presided over by Ms. Anisa A. Matuan, MPA, Chairperson of the Technical Working Group, and brought together TWG members and concerned health stakeholders, including representatives from the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) of Maguindanao and the City Health Office (CHO) of Cotabato City. The participants discussed the current situation of community health activities and explored strategies to strengthen the delivery of maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition services across the Bangsamoro region.

The JICA InaWaTaNu-BARMM Project Team presented key findings from its survey, highlighting existing community health activities, identified gaps, and areas requiring further support and improvement. The presentation served as a basis for discussions on strengthening community-based health interventions.

The meeting also focused on the proposed Training of Trainers (TOT) for Rural Health Units (RHUs), covering the roles of Barangay Health Workers as community health workers, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) services, and PhilHealth-related services. The proposed training aims to enhance the capacity of health workers and community partners in delivering essential health services at the community level.

An open forum provided TWG members and participants with an opportunity to share insights, recommendations, and concerns regarding the proposed community health activities. Discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration and coordinated efforts among health offices and partners in addressing gaps and improving community-based health services.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the next steps and commitments of the TWG, reaffirming the shared commitment of MOH-BARMM, JICA InaWaTaNu-BARMM Project, IPHO Maguindanao, CHO Cotabato City, and other partners to strengthen community health activities and contribute to improved maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition outcomes throughout the Bangsamoro region.

MOH-BARMM Intensifies TB Detection through Free Chest X-Ray Screening During Lung Month

COTABATO CITY – MOH-BARMM through the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) continues to ramp up efforts in the prevention and control of tuberculosis (TB) during Lung Month this August by bringing active case finding (ACF) and free X-ray services to vulnerable communities.

As part of Lung Month Observance, MOH-BARMM/NTP initiated Active Case Finding and Free Chest X-Ray Screening for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and other vulnerable groups in selected facilities, including the Lanao del Sur Provincial Jail, Marawi City Jail, Marawi Police Station-Jail, Malabang District Jail, and Cotabato City Jail-Male Dormitory.

Through this campaign, MOH-BARMM/NTP targets to enhance timely diagnosis, case detection, and management of TB cases while preventing further transmission of the disease, especially among vulnerable groups.

ACF involves intensified case finding activities by the health workers to detect persons with possible TB infection and provide the necessary referrals for proper treatment and management.

MOH-BARMM/NTP stressed the need to increase the access of vulnerable groups and people living in remote areas to TB screening services as part of its commitment to intensify TB case detection and response in the Bangsamoro.

With the support of Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) of Lanao del Sur, Marawi City Health Office, and Cotabato City Health Office, the MOH-BARMM/NTP ensures the continuation of active case finding activities as it strengthens TB prevention and control measures.

During Lung Month, the MOH-BARMM/NTP encourages all Bangsamoro residents to take good care of their lungs. If you have any symptoms of TB, please consult a doctor immediately and report to the nearest health facility for a complete check-up.

While the Bangsamoro celebrates Lung Month, MOH-BARMM/NTP is committed to its fight against TB through awareness-raising, promotion of early diagnosis and treatment, and mobilization of the community to fight the disease.

Healthy lungs, Early detection, Strong communities. Let us all work together for a TB-free Bangsamoro.

-BARMM
