Emma Tomlinson was diagnosed autistic at four, one month after her older brother, by leading specialists Tony Attwood and Michelle Garnett. As a child, she was selectively mute.

Then she found opera, and the performing arts gave her a voice that refused to stay quiet.

Now 25, the Queensland singer-songwriter has performed the Australian national anthem at the Womenโ€™s State of Origin, sung New Zealandโ€™s anthem at international cricket, and featured at the FIFA Womenโ€™s World Cup Fan Festival. Sheโ€™s also an official ambassador for Autism Queensland.

She doesnโ€™t frame her autism as something she overcame. She calls it her superpower, the thing behind her voice and the way she transforms into a character on stage.

From a little girl who couldnโ€™t speak to the voice a stadium falls silent for. In her words: being different makes a difference.
