The Altar and the Retablo

In a Catholic church, the altar is located in the sanctuary, the sacred space at the front of the church where the Mass is celebrated. It is usually placed at the center to show that the Eucharist is the heart of Catholic worship. The altar is set apart from the rest of the church because what happens there is holy and sacred.

The altar is shaped like a table, but it means more than an ordinary table. Just as people gather around a table to share a meal, the Church gathers around the altar to share in the Lord’s Supper. At the same time, the altar is also the place of sacrifice, where the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is made present during the Mass.

Because of its importance, the altar is treated with great respect. Catholics bow to it, the priest kisses it, and it is covered with a clean cloth. Candles and sacred items are placed on or near it to show reverence. The altar also represents Christ Himself, which is why it is never treated like ordinary furniture.

The retablo is different from the altar. It is the decorated structure or artwork usually found behind or above the altar. It often shows images or statues of Jesus, Mary, and the saints. The retablo helps people pray by reminding them of heaven and the holy people who lived faithful lives.

While the altar is used for the celebration of the Mass, the retablo is meant to inspire devotion and reflection. It supports prayer and teaches the faith through images, but it is not used for offering the sacrifice.

The altar and the retablo may be close to each other in a church, but they have different purposes. The altar is the sacred table and place of sacrifice, while the retablo helps guide prayer and reflection through sacred images.

WHAT DOES THE EXPRESSION β€œPIT SENYOR” ACTUALLY MEAN?

The Cebuano greeting "Pit Senyor!" is short for β€œPanangpit sa Senyor!" which means a plea to the Lord, the SeΓ±or Santo NiΓ±o (Holy Child), whose feast is observed during Sinulog.

The meaning of 'Pit'

"PIT" is a contraction of the word "sangpit", which is a Cebuano word for calling out loud a person or God with a particular intention. There is no exact translation for this word that could describe the Cebuano meaning of sangpit. Probably, the closest transliteration is "appeal'o which means making a serious or urgent request.

Sangpit is a much deep and calm word than 'appeal’. Sangpit is usually used when a person visits a homes a but nobody is around and he/she wants to borrow something from the owner, his/her action is "sangpit". A person says this when he/she is a distance away or does not have a sight of the receiver of the message. When a person does 'sangpit, he or she must have with him a request, appeal, or intention that the receiver could give or grant.

This is the sense of saying out loud in prayer "VIVA PIT SENYOR!" The person is making an appeal from a distance, unworthy to face or make a request from God and that one could only humbly utter this words with prayerful request. It is like crying out loud to God and gazing towards heaven by saying, "Lord, please answer my prayers!"

β€œSangpit" resembles on the shout of the blind man sitting by the roadside, who cried aloud to Jesus, β€œJesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Luke 18:35-43). He could not go near to Jesus because of his sickness but the best thing he could only do is to say aloud his prayers to him.

O gentle and loving Sleeping Santo NiΓ±o, as You rest in peaceful sleep, I look at Your calm face and feel the comfort of Your holy presence.

Teach me, dear Child Jesus, to place my worries in Your hands, to trust as You trusted the Father, and to rest in the peace of His love.

When my heart is uneasy, calm my fears. When my burdens feel heavy, lift them gently, as You once carried the Cross for me.

May Your quiet rest remind me that even in silence, You are working: healing, blessing, and guiding me.

Sweet Child of Bethlehem, watch over my loved ones tonight and always. Give me the grace to rise each day renewed, ready to follow You with joy and humility.
