This is why maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during braces treatment.

Braces can straighten your teeth—but poor oral hygiene during treatment can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Braces make it easier for plaque and food particles to collect around brackets, wires, and along the gumline. If these areas are not cleaned thoroughly every day, harmful bacteria can multiply, increasing the risk of white spot lesions (early enamel demineralization), tooth decay, and gum inflammation.

Those chalky white marks that sometimes appear after braces are not just stains—they are areas where the enamel has permanently lost minerals. Without timely care, these weakened areas can progress into cavities, while plaque buildup around the gums may lead to gingivitis and, if left untreated, periodontal disease.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is just as important as wearing the braces themselves. Careful brushing around every bracket, daily interdental cleaning, fluoride use when recommended, and regular dental check-ups help protect the teeth while they are being moved into their ideal position.

A successful orthodontic treatment is not measured only by straight teeth—it is measured by straight, healthy, cavity-free teeth with healthy gums.

Most people think the morning brush is the most important. Research suggests the bedtime brush may matter even more.

During sleep, saliva production naturally decreases, reducing the mouth's ability to wash away plaque and bacteria. As a result, dental plaque can remain undisturbed for hours, creating an environment that may promote bacterial growth and inflammation.

In a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers examined whether the timing of toothbrushing was associated with cardiovascular outcomes. People who brushed their teeth before bed—whether or not they also brushed in the morning—had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events than those who skipped nighttime brushing. Interestingly, brushing only in the morning did not show the same association.

The researchers suggest that removing dental plaque before sleep may help reduce the overnight bacterial burden. Because this was an observational study, the findings show an association rather than proving cause and effect.

Brushing before bed takes only a few minutes, yet it remains one of the simplest evidence-based habits for protecting oral health—

🦷 Nose Breathing vs. Mouth Breathing: Why It Matters in Orthodontics

Did you know that the way we breathe can influence how the teeth, jaws, and face develop? 👃🦷

Nose breathing supports proper tongue posture and a balanced relationship between the tongue, lips, and cheeks.

On the other hand, chronic mouth breathing may be associated with: • Narrow or high-arched palate
• Dental crowding
• Posterior crossbite
• Anterior open bite
• Increased overjet
• Changes in facial growth pattern

In orthodontics, we look beyond straight teeth—we also consider growth, function, tongue posture, and airway-related concerns.

✨ Early assessment can help identify habits and factors that may affect your child's developing smile.

Healthy breathing. Healthy growth. Healthy smile. 💙🦷
