Remember:

Your statistics should answer your objectives—not just produce p-values.

A statistically significant result means very little if it does not answer the research question.

The strongest studies are those where the objectives, methodology, and analysis all point in the same direction.

One of the most common reviewer questions is not whether the sample size was computed.

It's whether the sample size was justified.

✔ Where did the assumptions come from?
✔ Why was this effect size used?
✔ Is the target population realistic?
✔ Can the study actually recruit that number?

A sample size is more than a calculation.

It's part of the scientific justification of the study.

Because when the number is questioned, the protocol should already have the answer.

Remember:

Participants should understand the study—not just sign the form.

The best consent forms are not the longest.

They're the clearest.

✔ How those risks will be managed

Remember:

A study may be scientifically sound, but Ethics reviewers also need to see that participants are adequately informed and protected.

The clearer the explanation, the fewer questions later.

Before Ethics points them out, check these first:

📌 Objectives that are too broad or unclear
📌 Risks and benefits not adequately discussed
📌 Consent forms that participants may not fully understand
📌 Sample size without clear justification
📌 Statistical methods that do not answer the study objectives

These are among the most common reasons protocols come back with major revisions.

Most studies are not delayed because of the topic.

They are delayed because important details were missed early.

A second review before submission often reveals issues that are easier to address now than during Ethics review.

Back to the topic, most protocols are not returned because the research question is bad.
More often, the Ethics Committee is asking:

"Can this study be conducted safely, ethically, and produce reliable results?"

Before resubmitting, take a closer look at these areas:

If patients cannot easily understand what they are agreeing to, expect questions from the reviewers.

Why this sample size? Why this tool? Why this analysis? If a reviewer asks, the protocol should already contain the answer.

𝟱. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻?
A good protocol is not only scientifically correct—it should also be feasible in the actual clinical setting.

Remember:
Ethics approval is not the finish line. It is the beginning.

The strongest protocols are usually those that anticipate reviewer questions before they are asked.
