How many cups of coffee are safe to drink in a day? For some people, up to 5, according to a new scientific statement on caffeine and cardiovascular disease.
Next time youβre wondering if another cup is a good idea, keep these things in mind:
βThereβs no βrightβ amount of coffee. We all tolerate caffeine differently. Listen to your body about how much you should consume.
β Very high amounts of caffeine, such as levels found in energy drinks, may increase risks to the heart. βConsuming no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day is not linked to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
β Drinking regular black coffee without added sugar, cream or flavors may lower risks of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, heart failure and some irregular heart rhythms.
β Unfiltered coffees including espresso, French press, Turkish coffee and boiled coffee contain cafestol, a compound associated with higher levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol. Cafestol is not present in paper-filtered or instant coffee.
