When your vision starts changing, or you notice something different about your eyes, it is completely normal to feel a bit worried. Two common eye conditions that people often hear about—and sometimes confuse—are Cataracts and Pterygiums
While both can change how you see, they happen in completely different parts of the eye. Think of it this way: a cataract is a problem inside the eye’s natural lens, while a pterygium is a growth on the outside surface of the eye.
When Should You See an Eye Doctor?
Because both conditions develop slowly, routine checkups are the best way to catch them before they impact your daily life. You should definitely schedule an appointment if you experience:
✅Gradual blurring of your vision that doesn’t improve with new glasses.
✅Frequent changes in your eye prescription.
✅An ongoing “gritty” or burning feeling that over-the-counter artificial tears don’t fix.
✅A visible pink or white growth creeping onto the colored part of your eye.
Immediate Warning: If you ever experience a sudden, painful loss of vision, or sudden severe eye pain accompanied by redness, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Protecting your eyes from the sun by wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and keeping your eyes hydrated in dusty environments are wonderful, simple habits to keep both of these conditions at bay!
