📍 WHERE ARE THE AEDs IN GENERAL SANTOS CITY?

An AED can save a life—but only if people know where to find one.

When sudden cardiac arrest happens, there is no time to start wondering:

“May AED ba dito?”
“Saan natin kukunin?”

Through the DadiangasMed Initiative, our initial Public Access Defibrillation placements include strategic transportation gateways where large numbers of people pass every day:

✈️ General Santos International Airport — 2 AEDs

⚓ Makar Wharf — 1 AED

🚌 Bulaong Terminal — 1 AED

These locations represent an important beginning—but four AEDs are nowhere near enough for a city of our size.

We envision AEDs becoming as recognizable and accessible as fire extinguishers: in malls, schools, churches, hotels, government buildings, workplaces, sports facilities, transport terminals, and other high-traffic public spaces.

But Public Access Defibrillation is not simply about putting AEDs on walls.

People must know they are there.
People must know how to recognize cardiac arrest.
People must be willing to start CPR immediately.
And people must have the confidence to retrieve and use the nearest AED.

That is why our next challenge goes beyond AED placement.

OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK 🌹

Patroness of Dadiangas Medical Center

August 24 | Feast Day

There is perhaps no more fitting place to call upon Mary as Health of the Sick than within the walls of a hospital.

For generations, Catholics have invoked the Blessed Mother under the ancient title Salus Infirmorum — Health of the Sick, turning to her especially in moments of illness, suffering, uncertainty, and fear.

This devotion took on renewed meaning during one of the most difficult moments in recent history.

In March 2020, as COVID-19 spread across nations and hospitals around the world faced an illness that was still poorly understood, Pope Francis turned to Mary in prayer. He entrusted to her maternal intercession the sick, their families, healthcare workers, and a frightened world.

His prayer began with words that continue to speak powerfully to us:

“O Mary,
you always shine on our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.”

Those words have a special home at Dadiangas Medical Center.

Every day, within these walls, we encounter people at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. We see illness and recovery, anxiety and relief, grief and gratitude. We witness the skill of medicine and the dedication of those who care—but we are also reminded that healing reaches beyond the body.

As we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, our Patroness, we entrust to her maternal intercession:

- our patients who are suffering and hoping for healing;
- their families who faithfully remain beside them;
- our doctors, nurses and healthcare workers whose hands become instruments of care;
- those carrying illnesses quietly and courageously; and
- the entire DadiangasMed community.

May the Holy Mother teach us to remain beside those who suffer, just as she remained beside her Son at the Cross.

And may every person who enters DadiangasMed find not only excellent medical care, but also compassion, dignity, hope, and the assurance that in illness, no one should journey alone.

“Give Everyone Something to Care For” 🐶

Because belonging grows when everyone has something to contribute.

In a loving home, we naturally want to make life easier for the people we care about.

We prepare everything for the children.

We take over the chores.

We do things for our aging parents because we don’t want them to struggle.

It comes from love.

But sometimes, caring for someone also means giving them the opportunity to care for something—or someone—too.

• A child who waters the plants every morning.
• A teenager responsible for feeding the dog.
• A little one who helps set the dinner table.
• A grandmother who still chooses the vegetables for tonight’s meal.

• Someone who tends the garden.
• Someone who helps keep a shared space tidy.

Small responsibilities may look ordinary.

But they quietly tell us:

“You are part of this family.”

“What you do matters.”

“We can count on you.”

For children, age-appropriate responsibilities can help nurture independence, confidence, empathy, and a sense of contribution.

And for our older loved ones, continuing to participate in family life—within what they can safely and comfortably do—can help preserve something equally important:

purpose and dignity.

Because there is a difference between being cared for and feeling needed.

A healthy family needs both.

Of course, responsibilities should never become burdens. They should match a person’s age, ability, health, and circumstances.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The table doesn’t have to be set perfectly.

The plant may get a little too much water.

The folded towels may not look the way you would have folded them.

That’s okay.

Sometimes, resist the urge to redo everything.

Let them help.

Let them learn.

🤱 IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO SUSTAIN BREASTFEEDING

We encourage mothers to breastfeed.

But encouragement alone is not enough.

A mother may be committed to breastfeeding, yet still struggle when she goes home, returns to work, becomes exhausted, encounters feeding difficulties, or simply does not have the support she needs.

If we want breastfeeding to continue, we must create an environment where mothers are able to continue.

👨‍👩‍👧 AT HOME, SUPPORT MEANS SHARING THE LOAD.

Breastfeeding may be something only the mother can physically do, but caring for the baby is not hers alone.

Partners and family members can help with meals, household responsibilities, diaper changes, burping, settling the baby, and—perhaps most importantly—giving the mother time to rest.

Sometimes the best way to support a breastfeeding baby is simply to take better care of the mother.

🏥 IN HEALTHCARE, SUPPORT MEANS GUIDANCE WITHOUT JUDGMENT.

Mothers need accurate information, skilled breastfeeding assistance, encouragement during difficulties, and healthcare professionals who listen to their concerns.

Every mother’s breastfeeding journey is different. Compassionate, evidence-based support can make the difference between a mother feeling discouraged and a mother feeling empowered to continue.

💼 AT WORK, SUPPORT MEANS MAKING BREASTFEEDING POSSIBLE.

Returning to work should not automatically mean giving up breastfeeding.

Adequate maternity protection, reasonable lactation breaks, appropriate spaces for expressing milk, and supportive workplace policies allow mothers to continue providing breast milk while remaining productive members of the workforce.

WHAT HAPPENS WHILE YOU’RE WAITING FOR THE AMBULANCE? 🚑
Initiative

Someone suddenly collapses.

They are unresponsive.
They are not breathing normally.

Someone calls for an ambulance.

And then everyone waits.

But in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, waiting is not a treatment.

The heart has stopped effectively pumping blood. The brain is being deprived of oxygen. Every passing minute without CPR and, when indicated, defibrillation reduces the person’s chance of survival.

This is why an effective emergency response system cannot begin only when the ambulance arrives.

It must begin where the patient collapses.

The first person who can save a life may not be a doctor, nurse, EMT, or paramedic.

It may be YOU.

This is the purpose of Public Access Defibrillation (PAD): to build communities where ordinary citizens know how to recognize cardiac arrest, call for emergency help, immediately begin CPR, and use a nearby AED while professional responders are on their way.

Because there is a critical gap between “HELP IS COMING” and “HELP HAS ARRIVED.”

We need to fill that gap.

Not by replacing our emergency medical services—but by strengthening the first links of the same Chain of Survival.

Imagine General Santos City where:

A person collapses.
A bystander starts CPR.
Someone retrieves the nearest AED.
911 is activated (soon hopefully!).
A properly equipped ambulance is dispatched.
The receiving hospital is alerted.

From the hands of an ordinary citizen to the hands of professional responders, there should be no break in the Chain of Survival.

This is the bigger vision behind AEDReady Gensan.

AEDs in strategic public places.
More citizens trained in CPR and AED use.
And eventually, an effective, coordinated and unified emergency response system that connects the community, 911, EMS, and our hospitals.

The ambulance should not be where lifesaving begins.
