In recent years, nutrition research has highlighted the importance of food quality in shaping gut health.
Rice bran, which is fiber-rich and supports digestion and gut bacteria, is largely removed during milling and only partially retained in semi-polished brown rice.
A study by DOST-FNRI and DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) explored how brown rice and well-milled white rice affect gut bacteria and overall metabolism.
The study found that:
๐ Brown rice contains about three times more fiber than white rice, along with slightly less protein, higher fat, and lower carbohydrate content.
๐ฆ After six weeks, eating brown rice increased ๐๐ข๐ค๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด, a group of good gut bacteria that help break down fiber and other complex carbohydrates, while white rice had little effect.
This suggests that choosing brown rice may help support beneficial gut bacteria, which play a role in metabolism and digestive health.
Small dietary changes, like switching from white rice to brown rice, can help support better gut health. Fiber-rich foods like brown rice can nourish beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn produce compounds important for overall health.
This shows how everyday food choices shape your gut health and influence how your body processes food.
