SCABIES is a contagious skin infestation caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the upper layer of skin to live and lay eggs.

Symptoms:
🫆causes an intense, itchy rash—typically worse at night—and spreads through direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact
🫆 pimple-like bumps and tiny, burrow lines
🫆 rash often appearing between fingers, on wrists, elbows, armpits, and the waistline

Transmission:
Highly contagious, spreading mainly through close physical contact, though it can survive on bedding or clothing for 2-5 days.

Cause:
🫆 A parasite, not poor hygiene.

Treatment:
Scabies requires medical treatment (such as prescription creams or medications) to kill the mites and eggs. Everyone in a household usually needs treatment at the same time to prevent re-infection.

Crusted Scabies: A severe form, often called "Norwegian scabies," that occurs in immunocompromised or elderly individuals, featuring thick crusts containing high numbers of mites.
