👓 MYOPIA IN CHILDREN IS ON THE RISE. 👀

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common among children and adolescents. In the WHO Western Pacific Region, myopia has reached epidemic levels in some countries, with prevalence rising particularly among young people.

🩵 Know the signs:

• Blurry vision when looking at the board or objects far away
• Squinting to see clearly
• Sitting too close to the TV or screen
• Holding books or gadgets very close
• Frequent headaches or eye strain
• Difficulty seeing clearly at school

🌿 What can contribute to myopia?

Myopia can be influenced by genetics and environmental factors. Spending less time outdoors and having prolonged periods of near-work activities—such as reading, studying, and screen use—are associated with increased risk of developing or progressing myopia.

⚠️ Why should parents take it seriously?

Myopia can progress as a child grows. High myopia increases the risk of serious eye complications later in life, including retinal problems, glaucoma and other vision-threatening conditions.
