Sometimes, a small change can be worth paying attention to.

A yellowish tinge in the whites of the eyes can be related to jaundice. Sudden changes in vision...like new floaters, flashes, or a dark area, should be checked promptly.

And if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, don't wait for your eyes to hurt or your vision to change before taking care of them. Some eye problems can develop quietly, which is why regular eye checks are important.

Hot vs Cold Compress for Eye Discomfort: When to Use Each?

Hot Compress (Recommended For)

• Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
• Evaporative dry eye disease
• Digital eye strain and ocular fatigue
• Chronic blepharitis
• Chalazion (especially after the acute inflammatory stage)
• Stye (hordeolum) after the first 24–48 hours

Cold Compress (Recommended For)

• Ocular allergies with itching
• Eyelid swelling from minor trauma
• Acute red eye with irritation
• Early-stage stye with tenderness and swelling
• Periorbital puffiness
• Mild ocular discomfort after prolonged screen use

Avoid Hot Compress In

• Acute ocular inflammation
• Suspected eye infection without diagnosis
• Acute conjunctivitis with significant redness
• Recent ocular hemorrhage
• Elevated intraocular pressure when advised by an eye care professional
• Any condition where heat may worsen inflammation

Avoid Cold Compress In

• Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
• Evaporative dry eye disease
• Chronic blepharitis
• Chalazion requiring gland drainage
• Conditions where warming the eyelids is the primary treatment goal

Clinical Tip

• Heat improves oil gland function and tear film stability.
• Cold reduces inflammation, swelling, itching, and discomfort.
• The underlying cause of symptoms should be identified before selecting a compress.

Typical Application Time

• Warm compress: 5–10 minutes, 1–4 times daily
• Cold compress: 5–10 minutes, as needed
• Avoid excessive temperature to prevent skin or ocular surface injury.

When the front surface of your eye, called the cornea, is evenly round like a baseball, light focuses at the same point in your eye, causing clear vision. When it has two different curvatures like a football, light focuses at two different points, and vision can appear blurry or distorted. That difference in curvature is called astigmatism.​
