Most childhood emergencies are preventable. A few simple safety habits, close supervision, and knowing basic first aid can save a childโs life. Prevention is always the best medicine.

When a Tiny Object Becomes a Big Emergency
A 3-year-old child was recently brought to my pediatric clinic with something that looked simple at firstโbut was actually very concerning: a foul-smelling, blood-tinged, yellow nasal discharge coming from one nostril.
In children, especially when symptoms affect only one side of the nose, we must always think of one important possibility:๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ค ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐.
True enough, after careful examination, we discovered and removed a piece of plastic pillow filler lodged deep in his nasal passage. Once it was taken out and the area cleaned, the child improved with appropriate care.
This case is a powerful reminder that in young children, even the smallest object can quietly turn into a serious problem when placed in the nose or ears.

Parents and caregivers can reduce these accidents by:
โ Keep small objects out of childrenโs reach. Beads, stones, coins, buttons, small toys, seeds, pieces of foam, and other tiny objects should be stored in closed containers and placed where young children cannot reach them.
โ Supervise children during play, especially toddlers and preschoolers.
โ Check toys regularly and remove broken pieces or small detachable parts.
โ Choose age-appropriate toys and follow the recommended age on the packaging.
โ Teach children gently: โSmall things stay outside our nose, ears, and mouth.โ
โ Be especially careful with button batteries and small magnets, which can cause serious injury if swallowed or inserted into the nose or ear.

If you can clearly see an object and it is easy and safe to remove, it may sometimes be removed carefully. However, do not repeatedly probe, push, or use cotton buds, tweezers, or other instruments, because this can push the object deeper or injure the child.
For objects that are deep, difficult to grasp, painful, or not clearly visible, bring the child to a doctor. Some foreign bodies require proper instruments and good lighting for safe removal.
After removal, the doctor can check for injury, infection, bleeding, or inflammation and provide treatment when necessary.

โLittle hands are curiousโso make the environment safe.โ
A few minutes of supervision and proper storage of small objects can prevent an uncomfortable visit to the emergency roomโand sometimes prevent a much more serious injury.
Prevention is always better than treatment!
