Sorry to break it to you, but alkaline water is all hype and does not prevent kidney stones any better than regular tap water.

This journal shows that most commercially sold alkaline waters contain very little actual alkali, not enough to meaningfully change urine chemistry in a way that would prevent stones. In fact, for common stone types like uric acid and cystine stones, alkaline water provides no added benefit over plain tap water.

Here’s the key point most ads don’t mention:
👉 Your kidneys tightly control blood pH. Drinking “alkaline” water doesn’t alkalinize your body. At best, it slightly changes urine pH, and even that effect is inconsistent and usually clinically insignificant.

What does help prevent kidney stones?
✅ Drinking enough total fluid
✅ Evidence-based dietary changes
✅ Prescribed alkalinizing agents when medically indicated (not bottled water)

Bladder training is not what you think! Modern evidence-based practice does not recommend clamping the catheter prior to removal. Clamping not only fails to reduce urinary retention or recatheterization, but also increases the risk of UTI and delays the first void. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a neurogenic bladder, OB, orthopedic, or colorectal case — all RCTs and meta-analyses show no benefit. 🤷🏻‍♂️
