Today, our department had the privilege of learning from Dr. Santillan, whose consultant lecture reminded us that being a family physician goes beyond diagnosing and treating disease. It is about understanding the person, the family, and the community they belong to.
Through COPC, we are challenged to look beyond the clinic walls; to recognize the social determinants of health, identify barriers to care, empower families, build partnerships within the community, and create interventions that are not only evidence-based but also relevant, sustainable, and compassionate.
A patient is never just a diagnosis. Every illness has a story, every family has its own dynamics, and every community has factors that shape health outcomes. As Family Medicine residents, our role is to bridge these pieces together so that our care becomes truly holistic and meaningful.
