It’s true that science and what we understand changes quickly at the beginning of an outbreak. But let’s be clear, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended his department’s response to the nationwide rise in measles cases during a contentious interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on State of the Union.

Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, said he had “never questioned the efficacy of the MMR vaccine” and encouraged parents to have their children vaccinated against measles. The exchange grew heated when Bash pressed him about claims linking childhood vaccines to autism.

“Dana, you probably don’t understand this because you’re not a scientist,” Kennedy said.

“You’re not either,” Bash replied.

Kennedy is an environmental lawyer and does not have medical or scientific training. According to the CDC, two doses of the vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles.
