Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is the new name for the condition previously known as Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) - a condition affecting 1 in 8 women, or more than 170 million worldwide.
This change follows the largest global engagement ever undertaken for a medical name change, informed by over 22,000 survey responses, multiple co‑design workshops with women with lived experience and health professionals, and the involvement of 56 patient organisations and professional societies globally, including .
A meaningful step forward - driven by evidence, global collaboration, and lived experience.
We recognise that this change will take time and there is a 3-year transition period where both names will co-exist together. The new name will be embedded into the 2028 International PMOS Guideline.
