The recent series of unfortunate events in schools in Cavite and Tacloban have made us seriously reflect on one important question: Are our children truly safe in school?
For many years, active shooter incidents seemed to be tragedies that happened only in other countries, particularly in the United States. Today, however, these incidents have reached our shores, reminding us that no community is exempted from such threats. Whether in schools, malls, parks, places of worship, or other public spaces, we must be prepared to respond effectively during these critical situations.
Do we know what to do when faced with an active shooter? Are we familiar with the life-saving triad of “Run, Hide, Fight”?
✅ Run – If there is a safe escape route, leave the area immediately and encourage others to come with you.
✅ Hide – If escape is not possible, find a secure place, lock or barricade doors, silence your phone, and remain out of sight.
✅ Fight – As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, defend yourself aggressively using any available means.
What is most concerning is how many victims and bystanders freeze during these incidents. The reactions we witnessed during the recent stabbing and shooting events highlighted the need for greater preparedness and education. Training, drills, and awareness programs can help people overcome paralysis during emergencies and increase their chances of survival.
Preparedness is not about creating fear—it is about empowering our communities with knowledge and skills that can save lives. Let us advocate for active shooter awareness and emergency response training in our schools, workplaces, and communities. When seconds count, knowing what to do can make all the difference.
