"Recovery isn’t just about getting back in the water — it’s about rebuilding my foundation so I can train again at the level I want to. One of the biggest pieces of that puzzle is supporting my gut. Your gut biome plays such a huge role in overall wellbeing, energy, and resilience, and for me, getting that back on track has been a priority. That’s why I’m so grateful that I had a box of USANA Probiotic with me here in Dominica. I’ve made it a part of my routine as I focus on healing, rebuilding, and preparing for training again. I’m grateful to have USANA in my corner 💪🏼 and here’s to the first steps back to depth! 🌊💙" -USANA Athlete Sara Lynn Burnett

Vitamin D has been one of the most intensely studied nutrients over the past 25 years. Its role in bone metabolism and enhancing the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus have been well understood for decades. It’s also known to play a role in the immune system. Less talked about is its many influences on cardiovascular health.

Vitamin D has both direct and indirect influence on cardiovascular health. Vitamin D deficiencies have a direct effect on cardiac contractibility, cell proliferation and differentiation, atherosclerotic plaque, calcification, and the renin/angiotensin system (regulation of blood pressure). Vitamin D deficits indirectly influence cardiovascular healthy because of its association with conditions such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, PTH (parathyroid hormone), high blood lipids and insulin resistance.

There are a lot of good reasons to make sure your vitamin D level is in a healthy range (30-80 ng/ml, or 75-200 nmol/L). Do your bones, immune system, and cardiovascular system a favor and get your vitamin D level checked and get some appropriate sun exposure and supplements if necessary.

Here is a recent summary of vitamin D and the cardiovascular system.
