Growing up is basically unlocking a new “first” every few months. ✨

First job. First sweldo. First time treating yourself with money you earned. First bills. First solo decisions. First time realizing you can actually build a life that feels like your own.

Some firsts feel a little more intimidating, too. Your first unexpected expense, first health concern, first big mistake, or first moment when you realize, “Wait... ako na pala bahala dito.”

But that is also part of the exciting side of adulting. You get to learn what works for you, make better choices, celebrate small wins, and become more prepared with every new experience.

You may not feel ready for every first, and that is okay. Growing up is not about having everything figured out. Sometimes, it is simply about becoming a little more confident every time you try. 🧡

We can understand the logic of buying a spare tire we hope never to use. We can spend on small comforts because their value is immediate. Health protection is harder to appreciate because its value often becomes visible only when something goes wrong.

A cup of iced coffee gives you something immediately. You drink it, enjoy it, and know exactly what you paid for. A new pair of shoes enters your closet. A streaming subscription gives you something to watch tonight. Even a spare tire, although ideally unused, is physically sitting in the trunk where you can see it.

Then there is an HMO.

You pay for healthcare access for a defined period. Maybe you barely see a doctor. Maybe you do not need to be admitted to a hospital. The year ends without a major health emergency, and a familiar thought can creep in: Sayang. Hindi ko naman nagamit.

Maternity benefits remain essential, but a healthcare strategy centered mainly on pregnancy overlooks the conditions that affect women’s health, earning capacity, and quality of life throughout adulthood.

This does not mean maternity care should receive less attention. Pregnancy and childbirth still require accessible, high-quality, and financially protective services. The problem begins when maternity becomes the main framework for women’s healthcare rather than one part of a much longer health journey.

Women’s health is often treated as another term for sexual, reproductive, and maternal health. These areas are essential, but they do not represent the full range of health needs women experience.

The Philippine Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) industry continued to expand in the first half of 2026, reinforcing the growing role of managed healthcare in how Filipino companies finance and deliver health benefits. Leptospirosis cases in Manila have surpassed the city’s epidemiologic threshold, prompting health officials to raise concern over the current rise in infections.

If you live, work, or travel through flood-prone areas, take extra precautions. Avoid wading in floodwater whenever possible. If you have no choice, wear protective footwear, keep wounds covered, and wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water afterward.

If you have been exposed to floodwater, consult a healthcare professional or your nearest health center for proper assessment. Do not self-medicate with doxycycline or other antibiotics.

Watch for symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle or calf pain, vomiting, red eyes, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, especially after possible exposure to floodwater.

Stay informed and take floodwater exposure seriously.

High blood pressure can develop without noticeable warning signs.

Sexual health services may be available, but access can still feel difficult.

Fear of judgment, lack of privacy, family expectations, misinformation, and even discomfort talking about sexual health may keep people from asking questions or seeking care when they need it.

On Sexual Health Day, it is worth remembering that taking care of your sexual health is part of taking care of your overall well-being. Everyone deserves access to accurate information, confidential care, respectful conversations, and healthcare spaces where they can ask questions without shame or fear.

Better sexual health begins when people feel informed, supported, and safe enough to seek the care they need.
