What Do Stem Cells Actually Release?
When we hear “stem cell therapy,” we often think about the stem cells themselves.
But stem cells do more than simply become other cells.
They also communicate with their surrounding environment by releasing a wide range of biologically active substances.
These substances are collectively referred to as the stem cell secretome.
🧬 What can the secretome contain?
• Growth factors
• Cytokines
• Extracellular vesicles
• Exosomes
• Other signaling molecules
These biological signals are being studied for their potential roles in processes such as inflammation, tissue repair, angiogenesis, and fibrosis.
One way researchers study these secreted factors is through conditioned medium—the culture medium collected after cells have released their biological factors into it.
In regenerative medicine research, mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium has been investigated extensively in preclinical models to understand how these secreted factors may influence different biological processes.
This is the scientific concept behind our Stem Cell Lite approach at MiMMO Molecular Immunology & Medical Centre: focusing on the biological signals produced by stem cells rather than relying solely on administering living cells.
Stem cells → Secreted factors → Secretome → Conditioned Medium
The field is still evolving, and researchers continue to investigate how these biological signals can potentially be translated into safe and effective clinical applications.
