🏊♂️The athlete story:
Male, triathlete, sweating, sun, tight synthetic spandex = heat + moisture + friction + occlusion. Perfect for dermatophytes - classic for tinea cruris ("jock itch") but can extend to lower abdomen, inner thighs, buttocks.
👩⚕️Diagnosis: Chronic lichenified Tinea cruris / Tinea corporis - with secondary Lichen Simplex Chronicus
📣Break the cycle:
Keep area dry, change out of sweaty spandex immediately, cotton breathable underwear, dry groin thoroughly, avoid tight synthetic for 2-3 weeks
Stop scratching - short nails, cool compress for itch
📣Treat - general approach for lichenified tinea cruris is often combination:
Topical antifungal for weeks. For marked thickening, a short course of low-potency topical anti-inflammatory to break the itch-scratch cycle
Antihistamine for itch at night
📣Prevention for triathlete:
Wash workout gear at high heat, antifungal powder in shoes, treat tinea pedis if present, shower immediately after training, avoid sharing towels, weight management if friction is high.
