ECLAMPSIA – Obstetric Emergency
Eclampsia is a life-threatening complication of pregnancy characterized by seizures in a woman with pre-eclampsia, not due to other neurological causes.
🔹 When Does It Occur?
▪️ During pregnancy
▪️ During labor
▪️ Postpartum
🔹 Warning Signs & Symptoms 🚨
▪️ Seizures (fits)
▪️ Severe headache
▪️ Blurred vision / visual disturbances
▪️ Epigastric or right upper quadrant pain
▪️ Very high blood pressure (≥160/110 mmHg)
▪️ Proteinuria
▪️ Edema (face, hands)
🔹 Emergency Management 🩺
▪️ Magnesium sulfate – drug of choice
▪️ Control BP (Labetalol / Hydralazine)
▪️ Maintain airway & give oxygen
▪️ Monitor urine output
▪️ Definitive treatment: Delivery of the baby
⚠️ Key Message:
👉 Eclampsia is preventable with early detection and proper management of pre-eclampsia.
