For many of us, asking for help feels uncomfortable because we've been taught that needing support means we've failed. In reality, acknowledging our struggles and reaching out takes far more courage than suffering in silence.

A study by Martinez et al. (2020) found that many Filipinos are reluctant to seek formal mental health services due to self-stigma, fear of negative judgment, shame, and concerns about "losing face." Social stigma, including the fear of bringing embarrassment to one's family or being labeled as "crazy," further discourages individuals from accessing professional care.

Although asking for help can feel difficult because of these barriers, it is often the first step toward healing and recovery. In fact, research by Itzchakov et al. (2022) suggests that when people feel accepted, heard, and understood, they become more willing to express their emotions. This openness not only reduces feelings of isolation but also strengthens relationships and supports better mental well-being.

Together, let's challenge the stigma surrounding mental health. A reminder that the first step toward healing starts with acknowledging that it's okay not to be okay. Give yourself permission to seek the support you deserve.

We are proud to share that Dr. Marivic T. Sanchez, RPm, RGC, RPsy, Chief Psychologist of Thrive Center for Psychology Inc., was featured as a guest expert on TV5โ€™s Gud Morning Kapatid โ€“ Health Check Segment on June 29, 2026.

Together with hosts Dimples Romana and Dr. Richard Gadiaza, Dr. Sanchez discussed the timely and important topic of Menโ€™s Mental Health, highlighting the importance of recognizing emotional well-being, breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and encouraging men to seek support when needed.

Being ourselves may not be the easiest thing to do, especially when your identity has to be tucked beneath a certain facade built with what society deems acceptable.

This is a daily challenge for many members of the LGBTQIA+ community, often leading to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harm (Reyes et al., 2024). Our identity and gender expression should be celebrated. Yet, for many, it is met with constant stigma and discrimination, resulting in severe mental health disparities (Tan & Saw, 2022).
