The University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed), through its Diabetes and Nutrition Center, has marked Diabetes Awareness Week 2026 on July 23โ24 by bringing together healthcare professionals, patients, partners, and members of the community to promote diabetes prevention, early detection, and healthier lifestyle choices.
Carrying the theme โTara Na Diabarkada and Friends saโฆ Hawak Kamay Nating Tugunan ang Hamon ng Diabetes,โ the two-day activity highlighted UCMedโs continuing commitment to preventive healthcare and community education.
Dr. April Melody Abcede-Cadavez, an endocrinologist who heads of the Diabetes and Nutrition Unit, led the celebration.
โDiabetes is one of the most preventable chronic diseases. Through regular screening, proper nutrition, physical activity, and continuous education, we can help more people avoid complications and live healthier lives,โ Dr. Abcede-Cadavez said.
Participants joined a Zumba session that emphasized the role of exercise in diabetes prevention and management. The event also featured free blood sugar screening, nutrition counseling, educational booths, sponsor exhibits, and product presentations that encouraged informed health decisions and better diabetes care.
Dr. Rosheen Christille Supatan gave a health lecture, providing practical guidance on diabetes prevention, treatment, and healthy living, with participants actively engaging in the open forum.
The celebration concluded with the awarding of certificates, recognition of partners, and a closing message from Ms. Claire M. Cortes, RND, OIC chief nutritionist dietitian.
More importantly, the event served as a reminder that UCMedโs fight against diabetes goes beyond a two-day celebration. It is a continuing advocacy to empower individuals and families to take charge of their health through awareness, prevention, and shared responsibility.
