‎According to Dr. Rafael Henry Legaspi, a psychiatrist at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), there’s still no established causal link between video game mayhem and real-world aggression.

‎“There are studies being made to look into this phenomenon—the increase in video game use among young people and increase in gun violence in different parts of the world. But there is no conclusive evidence to show a direct link between the two,” said Legaspi, a training officer at the UP-PGH Division of Addiction and Recovery Medicine.

‎“It’s easy to say ‘it’s because of their exposure to online games.’ It’s easy [to stoke] moral panic that it’s the video game. Yes, it might be part of the equation, but it is not the direct cause. The increased violence among young people is very complex,” he added. | via INQUIRER.net

Thank you so much for your support and for joining us at the Magdalena Cruz-Palileo MD Professorial Chair in Psychiatry Award Lecture 2025-2026!

The event was opened by the staunchest supporter of our professorial lectures, our beloved Dean, Dr. Charlotte Chiong. The lecture, entitled "Promoting Mental Health Literacy in Higher Education Institutions," featured a collaborative project between CHED, UP Manila and our department called Project SINAG for Sulong Institusyon sa Napapanahong Aksyon at Ginhawa. The UP Manila Chancellor, Dr. Michael Tee, and the CHED Chair, Dr. Shirley Agrupis, also gave opening remarks.

The session was moderated by Dr. Francis Gordovez, with reactions from distinguished professors emeriti and luminaries for the biopsychosociospiritual framework and brain health, Dr. Lourdes Ladrido-Ignacio and Dr. Leonor Cabral-Lim respectively.

The subject matter was deemed so highly relevant that our UP President, Atty. Angelo Jimenez, gave the closing remarks, together with the Chancellor.

A total of nine hundred sixty-seven (967) participants, including presidents of SUCs and LUCs, attended the presentation, and we have been responding to feedback and questions since then. Another government office has signified interest in a similar partnership as well.

We are deeply grateful for the support and remain committed to continuing our endeavours that promote our values of honor, excellence, and service.
