Some days remind us why we chose to become doctors.

As a retina specialist, we often deal with difficult cases, uncertain outcomes, and the reality that not every vision loss can be reversed. But moments like these make all the challenges worthwhile.

After years of battling a difficult eye condition, hearing my patient say that she can finally see 20/20 again is incredibly fulfilling.

What touched me most was her simple wish to see and appreciate the beauty of the blue sky. Something many of us take for granted, but something that means the world to someone who has fought so hard to preserve her sight.

The journey hasn’t been easy, and not everything that was lost could be restored. But today, we celebrate what has been regained.

Thank you for trusting me with your eyes and for allowing me to be part of your journey. Stories like yours remind me that we don’t just treat eyes. We help people see and experience the world again.

Here’s to more clear skies ahead! 🥂

20/20 ako today

For the past 2-4 years, I started losing my sight to idiopathic intermediate uveitis. Hindi mafigure out ang cause so hindi ko alam anong iiwasan o gagawin to not have flares.

But today... Today was the best checkup I've had in my life.

Doc Paul said walang inflammation cells - words I never thought na maririnig ko pa ulit. I'm so thankful the body is responding well to the surgery and medications.

Also, pinabasa ako ng Snellen chart and I'm 20/20. Eye pressure is 18.

Maganda.

I grieve the loss of my left vision. I celebrate the regain of my right.

Sa ngayon, gusto ko lang muna makakita at matitigan ang ganda ng blue sky.

Pneumatic retinopexy in action.

This ultra-widefield image was taken immediately after applying barrier laser, just 48 hours after intravitreal C3F8 gas injection. The retina has successfully reattached, and the retinal break is now surrounded by laser to create a permanent seal.

Pneumatic retinopexy is a minimally invasive, procedure that uses an intraocular gas bubble and precise positioning to close selected retinal tears and allow the retina to reattach. It serves as an important reminder that not all cases of retinal detachment require major surgery. In appropriately selected patients, excellent anatomical outcomes can be achieved with a less invasive approach, faster recovery, and avoidance of operating room intervention.

The right treatment is not always the biggest operation. It is the one best suited to the patient and the disease.

Last Monday, at the National Children’s Hospital, we performed Fluorescein Angiography (FA)–guided indirect laser treatment to a baby with persistent avascular retina — a sequela of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

With the help of the Natus RetCam and its FA capabilities, we were able to clearly assess retinal vascular perfusion, making decision-making and treatment safer and more precise for our most delicate patients. Early detection and timely intervention remain key in protecting the sight of premature infants.

As we honor all preterm infants and their families, we also raise awareness for one of the most important conditions affecting premature babies’ vision: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

What is ROP?
ROP is an eye condition that can occur in premature infants when the blood vessels in the retina develop abnormally. If detected early through timely eye screening, ROP can be treated and vision loss can often be prevented. This is why regular eye check-ups for preterm babies are essential.

Let’s continue the fight to protect their sight and advocate for early screening and proper neonatal care.

November 17 is WORLD PREMATURITY DAY! The theme in 2025 as per World Health Organization is “to give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future”. Lets continue the fight to protect their sight 🌟

It was a privilege to take part in the Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Masterclass in Malaysia with Alcon. I was truly honored to contribute as a speaker, while also gaining fresh insights and perspectives from esteemed colleagues.

Though brief, the three-day program was filled with meaningful discussions and valuable learnings that made it both enriching and enjoyable—an experience I will always be grateful for. 🙏👁️

Did you know that certain eye conditions and even everyday factors can increase your risk of retinal detachment? Understanding these risks early can help protect your vision and prevent serious complications.

Who Is at Risk for Retinal Detachment? Know the Factors

Some people are more prone to retinal detachment. Risk factors include:

☑️ Age over 50
☑️ Family history of retinal detachment
☑️ High myopia (severe nearsightedness)
☑️ History of eye injury or surgery (like cataracts)
☑️ Certain eye diseases

If you have one or more of these, regular eye exams are crucial to catch early changes. Prevention starts with awareness.

A PUBLIC ADVISORY FROM THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY: Beware of unproven eye medicine, eye drops, and eye devices that are being peddled as a cure-all or prevention of different eye conditions. Consult your ophthalmologist for the proper care of your eyes.
