Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 1 in 10 people worldwide and often develops silently until serious complications appear. It increases the risk of heart disease, reduces quality of life, and can lead to kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation. The burden is greater among disadvantaged communities. ☝🤓

Early detection saves lives. Simple blood and urine tests can identify kidney problems early, allowing treatment to slow disease progression. Screening is especially important for people with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity, or a family history of kidney disease.🧫🧪💉

Environmental factors are also increasing kidney disease risks. Air pollution, heat stress, dehydration, and extreme weather can worsen CKD. Meanwhile, treatments like dialysis use large amounts of water, energy, and plastics, contributing to environmental impact.🌦☔

At the World Health Organization’s 78th World Health Assembly, a historic resolution recognized kidney disease as a global public health priority and formally acknowledged World Kidney Day.

ANO ANG GLOMERULONEPHRITIS?

🚨Ito ang PAMAMAGA o INFLAMMATION ng mga glomerulus o yung mga maliliit na filters ng kidneys

🚨Dahil sa pamamaga, nadadamage ang mga filters na ito at nagkakaroon ng PAGTATAPON NG DUGO AT PROTEIN SA IHI

🚨In general, karamihan ng mga GLOMERULONEPHRITIS ay IMMUNE-MEDIATED. Ibig sabihin, ang damage ng kidneys ay dahil sa pag-atake ng immune system sa mga organs gaya ng kidneys.

🚨Maraming klase ng glomerulonephritis, pero ilan sa mga examples nito ay:
- IGA NEPHROPATHY
- MINIMAL CHANGE DISEASE
- MEMBRANOUS NEPHROPATHY
- FOCAL SEGMENTAL GLOMERULOSCLEROSIS
- DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY
- LUPUS NEPHRITIS
- POST-STREPTOCOCCAL GLOMERULONEPHRITIS

🚨Tanging KIDNEY BIOPSY lamang ang tiyak na makakapagdiagnose kung anong uri ng glomerulonephritis meron ang isang pasyente

Acute Renal Failure (AKI) Vs. Chronic Renal Failure (CKD)

🩺 Acute Renal Failure (AKI)

Definition: Sudden ↓ kidney function (hours → days)

⏱ Onset

✅ Rapid (hours/days)

🔥 Symptoms
• ↓ urine (oliguria) or sometimes normal urine
• Nausea, vomiting, confusion
• Fluid overload (edema, SOB)

🧪 Labs
• Creatinine rises quickly
• BUN/Cr depends on cause (often ↑ in prerenal)

🧬 Kidney size (Ultrasound)

✅ Normal or enlarged

💉 Common causes

P-R-I
• Pre-renal: dehydration, shock, heart failure
• Renal: ATN, nephritis, drugs (NSAIDs, aminoglycosides)
• Post-renal: obstruction (BPH, stones)

⚡ Complications
• Hyperkalemia (dangerous arrhythmia)
• Metabolic acidosis
• Pulmonary edema

✅ Often reversible if treated early

🧑‍⚕️ Chronic Renal Failure (CKD)

Definition: Gradual kidney damage ≥ 3 months

⏳ Onset

✅ Slow (months/years)

😴 Symptoms
• Fatigue, weakness
• Itching (uremia)
• Poor appetite, weight loss
• Nocturia (early), later ↓ urine

🧪 Labs
• Creatinine elevated for long time
• Persistent proteinuria
• Low Hb (anemia) due to ↓ EPO
• Low Ca + High phosphate → bone disease

🧬 Kidney size (Ultrasound)

✅ Small shrunken kidneys (classic)
⚠️ Exception: diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney → may be enlarged

📌 Common causes
• Diabetes mellitus (most common)
• Hypertension
• Chronic glomerulonephritis
• Polycystic kidney disease

🧱 Complications
• Anemia
• Bone disease (renal osteodystrophy)
• Uremic symptoms
• Long-term fluid + electrolyte imbalance

❌ Usually not reversible, progresses slowly
