I know- this is such a hard topic to talk about because parents can be defensive - and professionals can be quick to judge. But- denial is so common and needs to be talked about- It really can help overwhelmed parents while they process information (short term!). But when it becomes long term, it not only adds to stigmas associated with disabilities, but also can deny a child access to needed support. And we want to be able to support our kids!

As professionals, it’s our job to support parents and help them realize and accept their child may be different. But that can be difficult, time consuming, and frustrating (I get it!). This is just one more reason why I developed my Autism Handbook! I want parents to have access to neurodiversity positive information and feel supported in their processing and emotions. It goes on sale later this month so keep an eye out! ❤️

It can be difficult for parents and teachers to know when to seek help from a speech language pathologist after that initial stage of learning first words. Speech therapy is commonly misunderstood outside of “speaking words” and “saying sounds correctly” - but language is a HUGE part of what we do! If you have a preschool (or older) child who has difficulty with any of the skills listed below, it’s a good idea to talk to a speech language pathologist! ❤️
