Established in 1985, VTH serves as veterinary training, clinical, diagnostic, & extension center.

CLSU-VTH is run under the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. It is being operated by the faculty members under the department headed by the VTH Director. Aside from consultation, treatment, surgery, and diagnostics services, CLSU-VTH conducts extension services to various municipalities upon the request of local government officials, private companies or civic organizations. Guided by its vision and mission, CLSU-VTH has established a name in Nueva Ecija and throughout the region as evidenced by the increasing number of its clients from nearby provinces.

𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞! Last August 28, 2026, the CLSU College of Veterinary Science and Medicine brought veterinary care and education to Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

Together with Hon. Mayor Rogelio B. Abad and Dr. Romnick Mariano, Municipal Veterinarian of Carranglan, our CVSM faculty members, clinicians, and students spent the day serving the community through rabies awareness seminars, anti-rabies vaccination, and pet castration.

From sharing knowledge to keeping tails wagging and communities safer, it was definitely a day well spent. Because veterinary medicine is not just about treating animals. It is also about reaching communities and making a difference, one pet at a time.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬. 😷

𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬, commonly known as 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵, is a persistent, unpleasant odor exhaled from the mouth. While it is most frequently caused by periodontal disease and bacterial plaque buildup, halitosis can also come from non-dental sources such as 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 like kidney or liver disease.

Timtim, a 5-year-old female mixed-breed dog, was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for her distinct smell. According to the owner, Timtim had been suffering from a severe case of halitosis for over a month, despite showing no signs of dental decay, no gingivitis, intact teeth, and no observable lesions in her mouth.

To thoroughly evaluate her oral health, address plaque accumulation, and rule out hidden problems below the gum line, a 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗮𝘅𝗶𝘀 or dental cleaning was performed.

Dental prophylaxis involves placing the patient under general anesthesia to remove plaque and tartar from both above and below the gum line, followed by tooth polishing to smooth the surface and help prevent future plaque buildup.

The entire dental prophylaxis procedure lasted for an hour, allowing Timtim to recover smoothly with a clean mouth and a fresh start.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗮: 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀

𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗮 is a yeast that normally lives on the skin and ears of healthy dogs. However, when conditions favor its overgrowth, it can cause 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗿, causing discomfort and affecting a dog's quality of life. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent recurrent infections and complications.

Mazey was presented to the VTH due to persistent ear discomfort, itching, and ocular concerns. Microscopic examination confirmed the presence of 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁, identified by its characteristic "𝙨𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙢𝙖𝙣" appearance. Mazey was also diagnosed with dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in the left eye, while the right eye had already healed.

Common signs of Malassezia infection may include 𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙮 𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙣, 𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙡 𝙤𝙙𝙤𝙧, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. To address these conditions, Mazey was prescribed antibiotics, antifungal ear drops, artificial tears for temporary eye lubrication, dexamethasone, and an Elizabethan collar to prevent rubbing and scratching. With proper treatment, consistent home care, and regular follow-ups, a positive recovery is expected.

Meet Mutya, a brave 8-year-old female dog who was rushed to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) as an emergency case. Her owner noticed a sudden and severe abdominal swelling accompanied by non-productive retching and drooling, following a short history of coughing days prior.

Upon arrival, physical examination revealed significant gas accumulation causing abdominal distension. While supportive intravenous fluid therapy was immediately started to stabilize her lethargic state, an initial diagnostic ultrasound was performed, and further radiographic imaging was recommended to evaluate her condition around the gas distortion.

A dog's stomach can sometimes fill rapidly with gas (𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁), causing it to swell and put pressure on nearby organs and blood vessels. If left untreated, it can become life-threatening. Emergency surgery may be needed to relieve the pressure and perform a 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘅𝘆, a procedure that attaches the stomach to the body wall to help prevent it from twisting in the future.

To save Mutya’s life, the attending veterinary team performed an emergency decompression, successfully draining the accumulated gastric contents and relieving massive pressure. Following stabilization, they performed an 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘅𝘆 to anchor her stomach to the abdominal wall, preventing future life-threatening gastric torsion. During the procedure, two incidental findings were identified and managed: splenomegaly (an enlarged spleen with abnormal coloration) and severe gallbladder distension, where approximately 10 mL of bile was aspirated.

𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐉 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐝: 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛 𝐀𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝

VJ previously underwent 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯 𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 as the initial life-saving procedure. Because of extensive soft tissue trauma and the need to allow wound drainage, complete skin closure was not performed during the first surgery.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 are often not fully closed during the first surgery. In many cases, complete closure is delayed to allow proper drainage of fluids, reduce bacterial contamination, and closely monitor the condition of the surrounding tissues. This gives time for healthy granulation tissue to form, which is essential for proper wound healing. By managing the wound in phases, veterinarians can significantly improve healing outcomes and help ensure a safer, more successful recovery for the patient.

During this second surgical procedure, the wound was reassessed and managed by thorough lavage with Dakin's solution, evacuation of accumulated purulent material, sharp debridement of devitalized tissue, and delayed primary closure through proper apposition of viable wound edges. A small portion of the wound (approximately 1 inch) was intentionally left unapposed to heal by second intention, with an additional small drainage opening maintained to facilitate continued exudate removal and reduce the risk of recurrent infection.

This management aimed to control local infection, promote healthy granulation tissue formation, and prepare the wound for complete closure in a planned third surgical procedure once the wound bed is sufficiently clean and viable.

𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 ❤

A puppy was rushed to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in critical condition following a severe attack by a larger household dog. Upon arrival, the patient was in shock, exhibiting extreme lethargy, acute blood loss, and extensive cranial trauma. A physical examination revealed 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 or 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙡𝙪𝙬𝙖 𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙖 (a condition where it the eyeball moves out of its place) alongside severe cranial softness and deep bite puncture wounds.

💡 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 within the household are critical emergencies that often starts from guarding over food or toys, sudden pain, or simply size and energy between larger dogs and young puppies. To keep pets safe, always supervise interactions, avoid leaving high-value items out in spaces, and ensure older or larger dogs have their own area to rest when puppies become overly energetic.

Because the puppy was so fragile, standard rapid IV (intravenous) fluid lines posed too much risk. A delicate micro-fluid strategy was implemented, administering Ringer’s Solution slowly at 1 mL every ten seconds to gently restore circulation without overloading the patient. Paired with Vitamin B-complex, immediate hemorrhage control, analgesics, and sedatives, the puppy was safely stabilized before undergoing emergency tarsorrhaphy surgery to reposition and protect the eye.

Emergency intervention was successfully performed by Dr. A.G.Agustin, together with the attending clinicians: Cassandra Almendral, Julius Gumarang, Florence Mirano, and Hart Teahoney Pastrana. Thanks to them, the puppy is now on the road to recovery.
