The Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery proudly celebrates another milestone as our resident physician, Dr. Jan Pauline F. Prieto, earned 3rd Place in the Interesting Case Contest during the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Midyear Convention held in Siargao, Surigao del Norte last May 6-9, 2026.

The paper and presentation featured a rare and challenging case of Extramedullary Plasmacytoma, highlighting the importance of vigilance, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary collaboration in the practice of ENT–Head and Neck Surgery. The case underscored how uncommon diseases may present under the guise of everyday symptoms—reminding clinicians to always look beyond the obvious.
This achievement reflects the department’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and mentorship. The presentation was prepared under the guidance of adviser and co-author Dr. Marifee Reyes, with the support of training officer Dr. Al Santiago.

Beyond the recognition itself, this accomplishment represents the kind of training culture we strive to cultivate—one that encourages curiosity, teamwork, compassionate patient care, and the pursuit of meaningful clinical scholarship.

To future ENT specialists looking for a training program that values both clinical excellence and academic growth, we invite you to become part of our journey. Here, residents are challenged to grow, supported by mentors, and empowered to contribute to the evolving field of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.

The Bicol Medical Center Department of Ears, Nose, Throat–Head and Neck Surgery (ENT-HNS) actively took part in the Surgical Outreach Mission for thyroid and cleft lip and palate patients conducted in Catanduanes from April 13 to 15, 2026. This initiative was led by the Eastern Bicol Medical Center and St. Cosmas and Damian Project (EBMC SCDP). During the mission, essential surgical procedures such as thyroidectomy, cheiloplasty, and palatoplasty were performed to address both functional and reconstructive needs of the patients.

We sincerely commend and thank our committed delegates—Dr. Nicole Sacayan-Quitay, Dr. Kevin Michael Mendoza, Dr. Justin Rebulado, and Dr. Darlene Payte—for their dedicated service, compassion, and invaluable contributions in providing quality healthcare to underserved communities. Their involvement reflects the department’s continued commitment to excellence and compassionate service.

Bicol Medical Center Department of ENT-HNS Participates in the 1st San Miguel Bay Fisherfolk Medical and Dental Mission.

In a dedicated effort to bring specialized healthcare closer to coastal communities, the Bicol Medical Center (BMC) Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ENT-HNS) actively participated in the 1st San Miguel Bay Fisherfolk Medical/Dental Mission. The event was held at the Calabanga People's Octagon on April 25, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Representing the department was Dr. Mark Laurence Barrios, a 3rd-year resident, who joined a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to address the medical needs of the local fisherfolk and their families. The venue also provided an opportunity to network with the local Fisherfolk to advance the department's advocacy for oral cavity cancer screening and prevention.

The mission was made possible through a strategic collaboration between the government and the private sector, emphasizing a shared commitment to community welfare. The initiative was held in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

The BMC Department of ENT-HNS's participation underscores the institution's mission to extend its expertise beyond hospital walls. By bringing specialized services, the department continues to bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility for the hardworking fisherfolk of San Miguel Bay.
