📣Benchmarking Activity of NICC Admitting Staff to BMC-MSWD's admission process and other services to pay patients.

📝July 7, 2026

The program commenced with a courtesy call to the Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Ronnie Gregorio Gigantone III, setting a tone of formal collaboration and mutual learning. This was followed by a detailed overview of the Medical Social Work Department’s daily operations, highlighting its mandate to conduct patient classification (for ER, out-patient, and in-patient), eligibility assessments and psychosocial interventions—key steps for various hospital assistance programs and ensure smooth admission particularly for pay patients.

NICC staff joined an actual admission process at both the New ER and Direct Admission, witnessing firsthand how admitting clerks, decking officers, and Medical Social Workers coordinate to verify carried orders, secure patient information sheets, and classify patients as pay. The group also conducted ward rounds at the 8th floor of Building C and visited other social service satellites across the hospital, gaining insights on how BMC maintains effective work flows and efficient processes.

This benchmarking not only strengthened inter-institutional ties but also equipped NICC staff with practical strategies to enhance their own admission protocols and patient support services. Thank you very much!💚

The BMC Medical Social Work Department proudly hosted the first ever Case Presentation Contest last June 30, 2026 at the BMC Auditorium carrying the theme: Clinical Competence in Medical Social Work Practice". Dr. Michellaine T. Tolentino, Head of the Allied Health Professional Service, graced the event and welcomed everyone sharing an inspirational message and warm felicitations. Eleven (11) Medical Social Workers confidently presented their best cases, each illustrating rigorous psychosocial assessment, thoughtful formulation of tailored care plans, and effective implementation of social work interventions~ also highlighting multidisciplinary collaboration, culturally sensitive approaches, and measurable client outcomes, demonstrating the department’s commitment to person-centered care.

The judging panel consisted of three esteemed Medical Social Work Department heads from other hospital facilities, namely:
- Ms. Geralene Fatima Yap of BRHMC, with special participation of Ms. Winrose Valladolid;
- Ms. Maria Jezebel De Mesa of BRGHGMC; and
- Ms. Sarah Gorimbao of CSTRC;
who brought valuable perspectives and professional rigor to the competition. Their feedback emphasized evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, and ethical decision-making, and they commended the case presenters for clear documentation, innovative interventions, and strong advocacy for patients and families.

Invited social work students from Universidad de Sta. Isabel de Naga, Inc. also attended to observe and learn from real-case presentations, enhancing the event’s role as a practical training opportunity and strengthening links between education and practice.

The event strengthened team morale, encouraged knowledge-sharing, and identified promising practices to integrate into routine service delivery most especially among the Ward Social Workers. Overall, the contest not only celebrated individual competence but also advanced the department’s culture of continuous learning, professional development and improved psychosocial services for patients of Bicol Medical Center.

Kudos to the entire MSWD team headed by Ms. Edna Ciudadano together with Atty. Ivy Pontanal, MSWD Clinical Unit, Ms. Maria Priscilla Aquino, MSWD Admin Unit and Ms. Laila Romero, Ward Team Supervisor. Congrats as well to Ms. Edlyn Batutay and her team from the MSWD Training Unit for organizing the event.

Mabuhay, BMC Medical Social Workers!✨💕
