Forensic and legal psychology often requires us to explain complex psychological processes in a way that is clear, responsible, and defensible. The same applies in public education: we avoid labels, avoid overclaiming, and help people understand what psychology can and cannot tell us.

Behind every legal psychological evaluation is hard work: reviewing records, examining case materials, preparing professional opinions, and being ready to explain them in court.

This month was a mix of legal evaluations, expert witness work, court preparation, and forensic psychology training.

𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀.

When the findings become part of the evidence, the psychologist may be called to appear in court as an Expert Witness to explain the evaluation conducted, the psychological findings, the basis of the professional opinion, and its limitations. The psychologist must remain prepared to explain and defend the work under oath.

This is why legal psychological evaluations require a different level of preparation from ordinary clinical assessments.

The work must be thorough enough for the report and defensible enough in court.
