I recently had the opportunity to discuss a psychological concept on NET25’s Kada Umaga as part of an effort to make psychological knowledge more accessible to the public.

When people hear the word “psychologist,” many immediately think of therapy.

Yet psychology also plays a role in courts, legal proceedings, capacity evaluations, trauma assessment, criminal responsibility, child protection, and other matters where understanding human behavior has significant implications.

Whether in a television studio, a courtroom, or an evaluation setting, the responsibility remains the same:

To provide clear, ethical, evidence-based psychological opinions that help people understand complex human experiences.

Thank you to NET25 and the Kada Umaga team for the opportunity to participate in the conversation.

Not every case needs a “psych report.”
But when the court asks a psychological question, it needs evidence-based findings, not opinions.

In many legal cases, the court is not only asking “What happened?”
It’s asking questions like:

- What is the psychological impact? (functional impairment, distress, trauma symptoms, coping)

- Is the pattern consistent and credible? (based on interview + standardized tools)

- What is relevant to the legal issue? (custody/parenting, VAWC psychological violence, capacity/competency, criminal responsibility, annulment/nullity-related issues)

Marami pa ring myths about psychological evaluation in legal cases.

The truth is, hindi lang ito para sa criminal insanity cases. It may also be used in custody disputes, competency assessments, trauma-related claims, risk assessments, fitness evaluations, and other legal matters.

This is why legal cases involving psychological concerns need proper, objective, and evidence-based evaluation.

Some marriages don’t end with shouting. They end with chronic emotional absence: no repair, no accountability, no empathy.

It's just distance that becomes normal.

In nullity stories, what people describe is not one fight, but a long pattern of “I was married, but I was alone.”

It often looks like this:
• conversations become purely transactional
• affection becomes conditional or disappears
• problems are minimized, denied, or blamed on one partner
• apologies don’t lead to change, so repair never happens
• one keeps reaching, the other keeps withdrawing

If this resonates, remember: it’s not about a single argument, it’s about the pattern and its impact over time.

𝐕𝐀𝐖𝐂 𝐛𝐚 𝐢𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐛𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨?

The Supreme Court ruling highlights a key point in VAWC cases involving financial support for a child: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧/𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

Na-acquit ang accused dahil hindi na-establish ang filiation/paternity, kaya hindi rin na-prove yung legal duty to provide child support under the facts of the case.

Not all harm shows up on the body, but it shows up in your life.

In legal cases involving psychological injury or emotional damages, an evaluation documents how the experience affected thoughts, emotions, behavior, relationships, and daily functioning using structured interviews, validated tools, and clear, court-ready reporting.

If you’ve been advised to secure documentation for your case, you deserve an assessment that is careful, objective, and ethical.

Not all critical evidence is immediately visible.

In many legal cases, documents, witness accounts, and observable behavior tell only part of the story.

Psychological evaluation helps examine the deeper behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and psychological factors that may significantly affect a person’s functioning, decision-making, capacity, and behavior.

This is why forensic psychological evaluation becomes important in certain legal proceedings—because some dimensions relevant to the case cannot be fully understood through surface-level information alone.

In court, clarity matters.
And credible psychological assessment can provide context that may otherwise go unexamined.

The Supreme Court has acquitted a mother of parricide over her daughter’s death, exempting her from criminal liability after finding that she has schizophrenia and her mental state deprived her of the capacity to recognize the wrongfulness of her act.

In forensic psychology, the question is not simply whether a diagnosis exists, but whether, at the time of the act, the individual had the capacity to understand its wrongfulness.

It must be established through a structured, defensible psychological evaluation.
