LEPTOSPIROSIS: KNOW THE SYMPTOMS. ACT EARLY.
After exposure to floodwater, muddy water, or water contaminated with animal urine, be alert for signs of leptospirosis.
COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
• Sudden fever
• Headache
• Chills
• Muscle aches, especially in the calves and lower back
• Red or irritated eyes
• Nausea or vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue or weakness
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY
if symptoms develop after possible exposure, especially if there is:
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
• Difficulty breathing
• Very little or no urine
• Severe weakness or worsening symptoms
Remember: Symptoms may appear days after exposure, don't ignore feeling unwell after contact with potentially contaminated floodwater.
When in doubt, get checked. Early medical evaluation and appropriate treatment can help prevent serious complications.
