A few weeks ago, I walked into our Al class feeling anxious. By the end of day 1, our professor asked each member of our learning team to share one keyword that captured our biggest takeaway. Mine was 𝐂𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 not because I know how to do it but because I realized it was something unfamiliar to me but it's something I could learn albeit one step at a time.

Over the weekend, I built 𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐊𝐄𝐘 my first real machine learning project. With the huge help from our professor, three models were used (Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting) on 2,500 teen profiles to explore some factors that predicts 𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐊 among teenagers.

The result: 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝟗𝟑% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥'𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥.

That number made me pause and reflect, pulling me back to my clinical knowledge and experience. I had to remind myself that this was not derived from real data and any findings need to be validated through evidence-based research. That was the critical moment it paused being vibe coding and became a 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘.

This current version includes the following: a risk prediction feature, the validated PHQ-9 depression screening tool, links to a few research, mental health hotlines, specialist directories, and a privacy notice stating that none of the information entered is stored.

A few caveats: this prototype is trained on synthetic data, an educational demo and 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥. The 93% is a pattern in this dataset and 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭. The PHQ-9 is a validated depression screening questionnaire but it is 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥. Any concerns about mental health should be discussed with a qualified mental healthcare professional.
It is ideal to keep growing and iterating this project, trained one day on real-world, ethically-gathered data with proper consent, robust privacy guardrails, and scientific validation.
