From Immersion to Advocacy: How DaMDamin 2026 Prepares Future Physician-Leaders

Medical education often begins with the patient in front of the physician: a history to understand, symptoms to interpret, and a plan of care to develop. Yet health is shaped far beyond the clinic's walls—by distance, available services, and the systems that determine whether care can be reached at all.

The fourth run of DaMDamin brought its sixth and seventh cohorts to Antipolo, Rizal, and Northern Samar. A 10-day community medicine immersion program of the Dr Rosita G Leong Primary Healthcare Hub (RGL Hub), DaMDamin sends first- to third-year medical students to see how primary care is experienced and delivered in underserved and resource-limited areas. It invites participants to understand primary health care and Universal Health Care not simply as frameworks or ideologies, but as actual realities shaped by the people, institutions, and conditions within each community.

For the RGL Hub, forming physician-leaders means nurturing not only competence, but commitment: to remain attentive to inequity, to keep listening when solutions are difficult, and to resist becoming distant from the realities that called them to serve.

What does it take to help build healthier communities?

During the DaMDamin 2026 Post-Deployment, we invited our participants to pause and reflect on one skill they want to intentionally cultivate throughout medical school. From listening with empathy to leading with purpose, their responses reveal the kind of physicians—and community partners—they hope to become. 🩺💛

🌱 From community immersion to reflection, action, and commitment.

The DaMDamin 2026 Post-Deployment brought together Cohorts 6 and 7 to process their experiences in Antipolo and Northern Samar, revisit the health-system realities they encountered, and reflect on their growing role as future physician-leaders and public health advocates.

During the culminating activity, participants presented their revised UHC-oriented policy briefs, incorporating feedback from community stakeholders and strengthening their recommendations through peer and expert critique. They also took part in guided reflection activities that encouraged them to identify the lessons, values, and commitments they will carry forward in medical school and beyond. 🩺💬

More than a closing activity, the post-deployment served as a space to translate experience into action—reinforcing that health extends beyond the clinical setting and is deeply shaped by communities, systems, and social realities.

As the program comes to a close, the learning continues: to reach communities with empathy, guide change through evidence and reflection, and lead with a deeper commitment to equitable health for all. 💙

DaMDamin Cohort 7’s time in Northern Samar offered a closer look at what public health means on the ground. 🌿

Through days of duty, observation, and reflection, our participants encountered the realities that shape how care is accessed, delivered, and experienced by communities. They saw how health is held not only by systems and services, but also by the stories, choices, and daily lives of the people within them.

As we look back on their deployment highlights, we carry with us the questions, insights, and moments that continue to deepen DaMDamin’s commitment to learning with and from communities. 🤍

The RGL Hub in partnership with Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians (PSPHP) successfully launched the first session of the Kumilos Series: "Laying the Foundation: Understanding UHC and Primary Care Reforms", marking the start of an exciting conversation on Universal Health Care and primary care reforms in the Philippines. Together with healthcare professionals, students, and public health advocates, we explored the future of UHC and reflected on our roles in strengthening primary care.

The first session of the Rosita G. Leong Primary Healthcare Hub Kumilos Hybrid Seminar Series in partnership with the Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians was successfully held on June 27, 2026 at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) Multipurpose Hall, bringing together participants both onsite and online. Attendees included ASMPH students and alumni, members of the Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians (PSPHP), and healthcare professionals from various disciplines across the country.

In this opening session, “Laying the Foundation: Understanding UHC and Primary Care Reforms,” Dr. Lopao Medina provided an overview of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law, highlighting its vision for a more accessible, equitable, and efficient health system. He also discussed the key reforms shaping primary care delivery in the Philippines and their implications for healthcare professionals and communities alike.
