How do we prepare future doctors for a world increasingly dominated by automation?

ASMPH faculty, staff, and administrators recently gathered to tackle the rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in medical education. Partnering with the Ateneo Science & Art Learing & Teachiing (SALT) Institute, the community explored the principle of "Measured Enthusiasm"—choosing a mindful, critical approach that protects human empathy, critical thinking, and clinical judgment.

Congratulations to Dr Cezar Jaime “Jay” Ortiz (ASMPH 2016) for winning First Place in the Creative Nonfiction Category of the prestigious Dr Arturo B Rotor Memorial Awards for Literature 2025!

His powerful piece, “Where the Typhoons Shape Our Health,” reflects on his time as an internist in Romblon, exposing how geography, weather, and systemic gaps directly impact patient care in island communities. Dr Ortiz is the first ASMPH alumnus to receive this national honor, beautifully embodying the school's mission of forming doctors who are also systemic social catalysts.

“We often think of climate change as distant... But for me, it looked like a 20-year-old girl with lupus, stuck on an island during a storm, with nowhere to go and no time to wait.”

Congratulations to the Ateneo Rosita G Leong Primary Care Hub on the kickoff of the DaMDamin Rural and Community Medicine immersion for Cohort 7!

We are incredibly proud to see our students take their learning beyond the classroom and into the heart of Northern Samar. Over the next 10 days, they will be engaging with rural health units, primary care workers, and local communities—honing the empathy and leadership needed to transform public health.

Our immense gratitude goes out to the Provincial Government of Northern Samar, under Gov Harris Ongchuan, and the Provincial Health Office for their unwavering support of this program.

Following a stellar rating of 5 (“Better than Adequate”) from the AUN-QA Programme Assessment in March 2026, the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) is already charting its next steps. Meet Dr. Dexter Galban (ASMPH Batch 2020), who was recently featured by the Obama Foundation!

As a 2024–2025 Obama Foundation Asia-Pacific Leader, Dexter is making waves by advocating for public health and nutrition in the Philippines. The feature highlights his successful efforts to secure and expand funding for a nationwide school feeding program, impacting millions of children and local food producers.

ASMPH alumni proudly represented the Philippines at the 24th World Congress of Psychotherapy in New York City. The event was held from 4-6 June at the United Nations Headquarters and the CUNY Graduate Center.

These doctor-leaders, who are currently residents at the PGH Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, showcased groundbreaking Filipino psychiatric research and clinical case studies on the international stage.

In times of uncertainty and natural disasters, emergency readiness is a collective responsibility. To ensure a safer campus, ASMPH conducted a comprehensive Basic Life Support (BLS) training program for its entire workforce.

Facilitated by the Philippine Heart Association, Inc., the sessions were led by a stellar team of medical experts, faculty, and returning ASMPH alumni. The hands-on drills highlighted that emergency preparedness extends to every corner of our campus, empowering our entire community to step up and protect lives when it matters most.

From mastering history-taking and physical examination to surviving those intense, timed station buzzers, our Year Level 6 students have officially cleared their Year-End Objective Structured Clinical Examination!

They stepped out of the lecture halls, put their clinical aptitude to the test, and handled the pressure like absolute pros. Watching them bridge the gap between textbooks and real-world patient care is incredibly exciting.

Huge shoutout to our dedicated faculty and staff for making this high-stakes day possible. And to Batch 2029, take a deep breath and celebrate this win. You earned it!

Ateneo alumnus Dr Manuel Mendoza Jr (BS Health Sciences 2015; MD-MBA 2020) continues to gain recognition for his contributions to medical research.

Dr Mendoza recently received multiple recognitions at the 32nd PMA Residents’ Research Presentation during the 119th Philippine Medical Association Annual Convention, earning awards in both the Original Research and Case Report categories.

His journey reflects the importance of perseverance, curiosity, and using research to better understand and serve patients and communities.
