“AI will replace doctors.”
I don’t believe it.
As physicians, we spend the better part of our lives studying. Even after earning the title of “MD,” we never stop learning because medicine never stops evolving.
AI can memorize entire textbooks in seconds, summarize medical journals instantly, and assist in making diagnoses. These are remarkable advances, and we should embrace them as tools that help us become better clinicians.
But medicine has never been about information alone.
AI cannot hold the trembling hand of a mother waiting to hear whether her baby in the NICU will survive. It cannot comfort someone who has just been told they have cancer. It cannot sit quietly with a grieving family after they have lost someone they love. And definitely, AI cannot pray with a patient.
Medicine is not merely the science of treating disease; it is the privilege of caring for people at their most vulnerable. As physicians, we are not the source of healing; we are simply God’s instruments, an extension of His healing hands.
AI may transform the way we practice medicine, but it can never replace the compassion, presence, and humanity that define the calling of a physician.
