The Research and Innovation Development Unit (RIDU), in collaboration with the Health Research and Development Consortium CALABARZON (HRDCC), participated in the 19th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week. This event took place from August 11 to 13, 2026, in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, hosted by the Health Research and Development Consortium of Region XII (HRDC XII).

Representatives from various regionsโ€”including state universities and colleges, private academic institutions, public and private hospitals, and other governmental bodiesโ€”were invited to participate.

Dr. Emelita Bagsit, the Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology IV-A, and Dr. Darren Venturina, the Head of RIDU, attended the event alongside members of the HRDCC Management Committee and Officers. Technical staff from RIDU, who also represented HRDCC, were present.

Importantly, selected health research from CALABARZON was showcased during national competitions, where the region achieved remarkable results, winning two first-place awards and one second-place award:

The overarching goal of PNHRS Week was to foster collaboration among researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and students to advance health research and explore innovative initiatives. The event served as a crucial platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing, highlighting the importance and continuing progress of health research and development in the Philippines.

The celebration concluded with the announcement that Region IV-A CALABARZON, which includes Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, will host the 20th PNHRS Week in 2027. This marks the beginning of a new decade for this annual event.

In collaboration with the Health Promotion Program at the University of the Philippines Manila - National Institutes of Health, RIDU successfully conducted the Health Policy and Systems Research Training for Higher Academic Institutions and Local Government Units (LGUs) online from June 22 to June 24, 2026.

The following institutions attended the training:

- De La Salle University - Dasmariรฑas (DLSU-D)
- De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI)
- Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariรฑas (KLD)

Led by Dr. Katherine Ann Reyes, the training was facilitated by her team from the Health Promotion Program.

This training aimed to enhance the capacity of academic institutions, medical organizations, local government units, and health partners to conduct policy-relevant research. The program began with foundational sessions on Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR), Universal Health Care, and health policy development, helping participants identify key issues, formulate research questions, and choose appropriate research methodologies.

Additionally, the workshop emphasized translating research into actionable practice. Key topics covered included research management, effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and writing policy briefs.

The Research and Innovation Development Unit (RIDU) congratulates our very own Dr. Darren Venturina on his appointment as Associate Editor of the ASEAN Journal of Disaster Health Management (AJDHM) for 2026โ€“2028.

The AJDHM, the official journal of the ASEAN Academic Network on Disaster Health Management (AAN-DHM), serves as a regional platform for advancing research, knowledge sharing, and policy dialogue in disaster health management across ASEAN.

Dr. Venturina was nominated by the Department of Health โ€“ Health Emergency Management Bureau (DOH-HEMB) to serve as the Philippine representative on the editorial board.

This recognition highlights his dedication and valuable contribution to strengthening disaster health management not only in CALABARZON but also in the ASEAN region.

We are excited to announce the Call for Proposals for the Advancing Health Through Evidence-Assisted Decisions with Health Policy and Systems Research (AHEAD with HPSR) Program!

This call aims to support high-quality, policy-relevant research and other related activities that strengthen health systems, inform decision-making, and contribute to evidence-based health policies and programs in the Philippines. Proposed studies or projects must be aligned with the Medium-Term Health Research and Innovation Agenda (MTRIA) 2023โ€“2028, particularly priority areas under Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR).
