A clinical trial has linked daily vitamin C supplements to significantly higher survival rates in patients.

The randomized, double-blind EVITA trial, published in the journal Cancer, investigated the impact of daily 1,000 mg oral vitamin C supplements on 109 patients in the United States and Denmark.

Participants, all diagnosed with pre-cancerous blood conditions or low-risk blood cancers, received either vitamin C or a placebo for 12 months.

Although the trial did not meet its primary goal of slowing abnormal blood cell growth, exploratory follow-up data over nearly three years revealed a remarkable survival signal. Only 11 deaths occurred in the vitamin C group, compared to 24 deaths among those taking the placebo.

Beyond improved survival, patients taking vitamin C showed positive changes in inflammatory signaling and experienced fewer serious complications, including lower rates of pneumonia and anemia.

Researchers from Denmark's Rigshospitalet and the U.S. Van Andel Institute emphasized that while it is too early to change clinical recommendations, the trial provides a strong scientific rationale for larger studies.

Because pre-cancerous blood conditions currently have no approved therapies to prevent progression, these findings open an exciting, low-cost avenue for cancer interception.
