Be Informed: MONKEYPOX
Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease. It is harbored by rodents and non-human primates (like monkeys) but the natural reservoir is unknown.
Most significant risk factors include close physical contact with infected persons, eating inadequately cooked animal products from infected animals, and young and immunocompromised individuals.
Transmission can be direct via animal-to-human by bite, scratch or contact with lesions, blood or excretions from infected animals, or via human-to-human contact with lesions and secretions or respiratory droplets. Indirect transmission can occur via contact with lesion material.
Incubation period ranges from 5 to 21 days. Symptoms of the prodromal period (Days 0-5) include fever, lymphadenopathy, myalgia, back pain, and weakness. Skin eruption of rash occurs 1 to 3 days after onset of fever, and occurs more frequently on the face and the extremities.
