The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) recently marked a significant milestone in its diagnostic capabilities with the blessing of the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝟵𝟬 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁. Led by 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿, alongside 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗿. 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮 𝗜𝗜𝗜 and Radiology staff led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮, the ceremony highlighted the culmination of years of rigorous planning and procurement. This high-performance system is notably the second machine the Department of Radiology has successfully secured with a ten-year warranty, a strategic achievement that ensures long-term operational reliability and state-of-the-art imaging *modalities* for the Institute’s specialized medical services.

The CombiDiagnost R90 is a versatile dual-modality solution that integrates digital radiography and fluoroscopy, allowing for a wide array of interventional and diagnostic procedures with optimized dose management and enhanced patient comfort. This new unit will be pivotal in diagnosing renal and urologic conditions through specialized examinations such as cystograms, retrograde urethrograms, and fluoro-guided nephrostomy tube changes. Furthermore, its advanced imaging capabilities extend to complex gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and respiratory procedures—including barium swallow procedures, percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainages, and post-operative contrast examinations—strengthening NKTI’s commitment to providing world-class precision medicine and comprehensive patient care.

𝗡𝗞𝗧𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 (𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗖)

Following its closure in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) commenced its initiative to revive the NKTI Radiation Oncology Section through the 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 (𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗖).

The LINAC is commonly used as a mode of treatment for cancer, utilizing high-energy x-rays or electrons to target and destroy specific tumor volumes in a patient’s body, while minimizing the dose of radiation to surrounding tissue.

Department of Health Secretary Hon. Sec. Teodoro J. Herbosa, and Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Michael O. De Jesus and Chairman of the DBP Board of Directors Mr. Philip G. Lo joined members of the NKTI Executive Committee, headed by Executive Director Dr. Jose Dante P. Dator, in signing the deed of donation of the LINAC.

Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines after ischemic heart disease as of October 2025 (per Philippine Statistics Authority Press Release No. 2025-470). As such, the NKTI is committed to continuous improvement of its healthcare delivery and services, whether through acquiring medical expertise and skills or technology to aid in proper diagnosis and treatment of disease.
