A study found that contact lens cases is the most frequently contaminated item in contact lens wear with about 62% of incidence rate. This is due to the lack of compliance and hygenic lens care practices of patients.
Remember that cleaning your contact lens case is as important as cleaning your lenses.

📍To clean your case:
1. After wearing your lenses, throw away the contact lens solution in the lens case.
2. Put fresh solution in.
3. Rub the case.
4. Dry with paper towel.

📍Rubbing and drying the lens case is the most effective regimen to reduce biofilm on the lens case.

👌Notice that he rubs not only the inner part of the lens (concave part), but also the outer part of the lens (convex side). The reason behind this extra step is that the inner part touches the eyeball, while the outer part touches the eyelids. When wearing lenses,
even with monthly disposables, sometimes there will be tear debris or some protein deposits that will get stuck on the lens surface, skipping the rubbing part on the outer surface may cause allergic reaction to the eyelids. 😬

📍 So remember, you need to RUB BOTH SIDES of your contact lenses to prevent allergies. 🙈

This is a 41 year old male patient with keratoconus from Pakistan. He was already a user of small gas permeable lenses before from his country since 2014. Since he was already assigned in the Philippines, he went to a specialist for a consult, and was eventually referred to us. He had a history of wearing corneal gas permeable lenses but was afraid to wear them outside the house for the fear of the lens popping out.

Both corneas showed scars already. We eventually fitted him with scleral contact lenses which gave him best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 and 20/25 for the right and left eye respectively. He now wears his scleral contact lenses always, not afraid that the lenses will pop-out.

Scleral contact lenses are larger sized gas permeable contact lenses that are fitted in patients with complicated prescriptions, severe dry eyes and irregular corneas due to keratoconus, scars, post-transplants and other corneal diseases. Since they are larger and are more stable than smaller corneal GP lenses, these lenses will not pop-out all of a sudden.
