The Toxicology Referral and Training Center (TRTC) of the East Avenue Medical Center was established in April 1995. It functions as a diagnostic, management, and referral center which serves the patients and the community by providing information and awareness. The TRTC’s main responsibility is to provide a 24-hour emergency toxicology management consultations for victims of poisoning, and serve a

s a source for pharmacology and toxicology-related information. The TRTC monitors the epidemiology of human poisoning and provides surveillance for environmental and occupational chemical exposures, drug abuse, and pharmaceutical interactions and adverse effects. All the nurse toxicologists of the TRTC are highly specialized and trained to assess and manage poisoning emergencies. When a case is being referred to the TRTC, resident rotators and/or nurse toxicologists assess its severity and use knowledge and experience, team consultations, and a variety of references to identify the poison and recommend treatment. The TRTC also serves as one of the training centers in toxicology for doctors, nurses and other allied healthcare professions; in-patient and out-patient management of poisoning cases; emergency response during chemical incidents; perform researches in poisoning, toxicities, and adverse drug reactions; perform health and environmental assessment, and environmental monitoring.

Strengthening Toxicology Nationwide through Mentoring and Monitoring ⚕️

As part of ongoing efforts to support and enhance toxicology services across the country, a validation visit was conducted at Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital on May 26–28, 2026. The activity aimed to verify the checklist previously submitted by the institution for its Toxicology Specialty Center, in accordance with the Resource Standard Framework.

The validation was carried out by representatives from the East Avenue Medical Center – Toxicology Referral and Training Center: Dr. Emily Sarne-Olaño, Dr. John Paul E. Ner, Dr. Ellen Grace Joy Samaniego, and Ms. Cecilia Dolores. The visit involved reviewing facility resources, service capability, and systems supporting the delivery of toxicology and poison management services.

The activity highlights the continued importance of collaboration, shared standards, and institutional commitment in strengthening toxicology care and improving patient safety nationwide.

Supporting responder health and environmental exposure monitoring 🚒

A post-landfill fire responder health assessment was conducted on May 28, 2026 at Navotas City Hospital for responders involved in or exposed to the Navotas sanitary landfill fire. The activity aimed to screen for possible heavy metal poisoning and other health risks associated with environmental exposure, with a total of 66 responders assessed during the activity.

The East Avenue Medical Center – Toxicology Referral and Training Center team was led by Dr. TereAnthony Abella, together with Dr. Raezelle Nadine Ramoso, Dr. Aldrian Geguinto, Ms. Genalyn Arce, Mr. Ricardo Escorpiso Jr., and Ms. Cacharel Castillo.

The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Health – Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH MMCHD), the Navotas Local Government Unit, the City Health Office, and Navotas City Hospital, highlighting the importance of inter-agency coordination in protecting responder health and strengthening environmental health preparedness.

May in Motion: Collaboration, Preparedness, and Toxicologic Service ⚕️🧪🤝

May was a productive month for the Toxicology Referral and Training Center (TRTC), marked by continued collaboration, systems development, capacity-building, and public health engagement.

TRTC representatives participated in national workshops and stakeholder meetings focused on occupational health, poison information services, health risk assessment, environmental health, and national health security. Validation visits were also conducted at Cotabato Regional and Medical Center and Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital in support of strengthening Toxicology Specialty Centers nationwide.

In response to the Navotas sanitary landfill fire, TRTC likewise conducted a post-fire responder health assessment in collaboration with DOH MMCHD, the Navotas LGU, City Health Office, and Navotas City Hospital, screening responders for possible heavy metal exposure and other environmental health risks.
